Ghost Signs, are old hand-painted signs advertising various products, usually on buildings and kept for nostalgia or because of neglect.
: : :
Here,
on the side of a one-story red brick building
in the small Whitman County town of Oaksdale,
‘Wheat Manna’ is advertised.
: : :
Upon a closer look,
you can see that the lower set of boarded up windows
were cut through the brick wall after the sign was painted,
and that it also says
‘P L Crawford Druggist.’
: : :
Wheat Manna,
I love that.
: : :
I have searched a number of times
for information about it
but have never found any information about the product
or the company making it.
I have seen similar ‘Wheat Manna’ ghost signs
painted on several old buildings
in other small southeastern
Washington rural towns.
If I had to guess,
I would say it was a hot cereal,
perhaps bread,
or maybe even a flour brand.
: : :
Speaking of hot cereal,
I think I’ll go make some oatmeal
for breakfast.

What a lovely ghost sign.
I love the way those old ghost signs look on the brick buildings! I haven’t noticed signs like that on buildings here in the East. They make me think of the “Old West”.
Oh, I always love those! Great find, Madge.
I love those old signs – I”ve not heard of that one either – but the photo is great. There is a huge Coca Cola sign on the side of a building in Bellingham – the city council made the building owner paint over the top part of the sign that said Coca Cola in big letters because they said it was advertising. Yet there are the words Coca Cola on the hat of the little guy holding the bottle – and also words on the bottle – go figure. I’m just glad they didn’t make them paint over the whole sign. There was a very very old Ranier Beer sign on the side of a building in Fairhaven and they took out the bricks it was painted on – so sad.
Love the lettering and bold colors. :)
Love the worn paint on the old brick.
So colorful and always wonderful photography that you take ~ thanks, xxx

I love old ghost signs! There are several in the old mining town of Bisbee, AZ near here. :)
Madge, the photos you take of buildings are always interesting. I took one last week and when I imported it! it was so blah!!!…:)JP
Nice find. I like that building.
It is interesting and nostalgic, these old commercials (in Germany the building otherwise) and I like to see from the U.S., as I often read in books.
I also like oatmeal, eat every day…
Thanks for hosting, have a nice day
What a great find Madge, Love old buildings and ghost signs are so cool!
Love that green bench!
I love “Ghost Signs” we have a couple of them here in Walla Walla that I always enjoy driving past and seeing them. This one is pretty cool looking. On doing a Google Search on Wheat Manna it does have something to do with bread.
We’ve seen a new one recently after an adjacent building was torn down. We’ve been trying to get a photo but there is a chain link fence obscuring much of the view. Time to get creative :)
Great find and lovely capture!
Love those old buildings. There used to be so much artwork in the advertising/murals on them.
