Sailor’s Rest, what could this be?
: : :
Here,
in the SODO district (south of downtown) of Seattle
is a vintage neon sign which says ‘Sailor’s Rest,’ across an anchor.
It is displayed on the side of an old warehouse built in 1917,
currently owned by Sailors Rest LLC.
: : :
So,
I am wondering,
what was the original purpose of this neon sign.
Is it in it’s original location?
It is just a few blocks from Seattle’s working waterfront,
was it a refuge for sailor’s years ago?
: : :
There is a Catholic Seaman’s Club in Seattle that opened in 1939
to serve the needs of merchant marines
from around the world.
I remember
when I worked on the waterfront for 20 years,
having sailors ask me how to get there from the docks
where their ships were berthed while being unloaded and loaded again.
: : :
Perhaps,
there once were two places of refuge
for the men
who down to the sea in ships.
: : :
I’ve been doing a lot of apologizing lately.
Work is really exhausting me.
I am sorry
that Weekly Top Shot is SO late going up again today.
I slept for 14 hours.

Now that is one vibrant sign, we just don’t have anything like that in England, well not in our bit of countryside anyway, London may be.
