Studying – Weekly Top Shot #73

Studying at the Seattle Public Library - Seattle WA

Studying – stud.y.ing – (present participle of stud·y) The devotion time and attention to acquiring knowledge on (an academic subject), esp. by means of books.

:   :   :

Last fall, my daughter and I, cameras and tripods in tow,

visited the main branch of the Seattle Public Library in downtown Seattle,

it is an unusual building of modern award winning design.

:   :   :

While on the 8th floor, walking down an aisle between long shelves of books,

I saw this fellow sitting facing the exterior windows, studying intensely.

The light from the windows bathed him in electric blue light.  As if inspiration were pouring upon him from heaven.

:   :   :

I’ve done my fair share of studying in my life, twelve years of public school and two years of college

and a life long learner, I am a lover of knowledge and books.

I’ve always learned best visually, by reading and writing

utilizing highlighting, note taking, and outlining.

:   :   :

eBooks,

love them or hate them.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tablet 7.0 Plus with wifi, with a Kindle app.

Yes, I do read books on it, but I still much prefer a physical book, that I can hold in my hand,

where I am still able to highlight important text, and write notes in the margins.

What about you,

paper or electronic?

Kindle. I was a reluctant convert, but bought it because we travel so much and I was tired of giving away so many books every time we moved on. Now, I have to say I’m nearly totally converted. I love having hundreds of books at my fingertips, just sitting in my purse! The size and screen are comfortable, and it’s lighter than a lot of the epic hardbacks I love to read. Hurts less when I fall asleep with it and drop it on my face!

    Thanks for hosting! :)

  2. “… a life long learner, I am a lover of knowledge and books.” Awesome, Madge. Me too.

I have had a Kindle Fire for a little over a year. I love it and prefer it over hard copy. The main reason is because I can make the font big enough to easliy read and it’s very handy to usewhile I walk on the treadmill.

  3. This is a great shot! Love the perspective and the blue glow.

I’m an avid reader and much prefer a ‘real’ book in my hand. There’s just something about the feel and smell of a paperback book, whether old or new :) I have a Kindle Fire and it comes in handy since I review for several Christian publishers. There are often times I accept an ebook because it’s the only copy available.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  4. Madge love this shot of the man studying in the library bathed in “the light of knowledge”. Wanted to let you know that once again, for some reason unknown to me, I was unable to get the link back to you on my post. Tried it 3 times. Sorry about this, and I just don’t understand why I am having this problem. It is with your link only. Have a wonderful day, out and about with your camera!

  6. I like how the books shelves act as leading lines right to the studious man and the blue light! Really nice shot! I, too, like holding an actual book, but I also like the convenience of e-books and no clutter afterwards.

  7. I’ve got to ask….did he hear your shutter release or was he so absorbed, it didn’t phase him? It’s a wonderful photo! As far as electronic vs. actual books….literature I want to hold near and dear to my heart I buy hardcover but I do use my Kindle (love it, in fact). I have Anna Karenina, War & Peace, and Daddy Longlegs in hard cover (2nd editions, I think)….they are close to my heart.

    1. No probably not, I was a long way off and my shutter is fairly quiet… I have books that I’ve moved with me for years. I’m a de-clutter-er at heart, but always have extreme trouble getting rid of a book… and then inevitably need the one I got rid of! ;-)

  8. Although I read many articles and posts on the internet(blogs etc) I simply can not read an ebook. I must have the pleasure of turning pages! Crisp pages that have yet to see eyes. I do prefer to read hardback books as well, but will read a paperback if pushed.

  9. for a long time i was anti eBooks .. but now i am in love with the convenience of having my ‘library’ with me so i can pick and choose what i want to read .. i use my iPad … love it ..

    love that shot …

  10. Beautiful shot! I am a lifelong learner, too, and love to study and take notes on subjects I am really interested in! I have a nook, which I really like, but I LOVE the library and hate paying for books that I can borrow. I usually buy books that I think I will want to share with others or mark up all over the place!

  11. I’ve always been a lover of libraries and books. I am an avid r-reader as I love the idea of travelling with lots and lots of books without the weight. I use my library to download books to reduce my book budget.

  12. Definitely paper, Madge! I have books stacked everywhere, but I haven’t been reading much lately. That doesn’t stop me from buying from Literary Guild and Quality Paperback Book Club, though. Love your POV in this image of the library….it looks very “architectural,” unlike my vision of most libraries. Beautiful light, too.

  13. I like both for different reasons. I swore I would never, ever go to digital books, but now that I have, I find the convenience of having the KIndle App right on my iPad and iPhone so great! No more forgetting to bring a book. I can read anywhere…even waiting in line at the grocery store!

  14. Love the lighting on this shot. It takes me back to days researching at the law library at the Capital – before information was free flowing on the internet. Can you believe there was actually such a time, and while I was alive no less. Sounds so prehistoric.

  15. The light does cast a heavenly blue glow.
I read both on my Kindle and actual books. I still prefer a book because having no feeling in my fingertips I make mistakes when touching the screen. But for traveling or waiting for appointments, the tablet is handy.

  16. Beautiful shot!
I LOVE reading on my Kindle and Ipad. Ebooks have opened a whole new world of authors that I might not have ever heard of/read – and I am able to “check out” books on my kindle online thru my library. I have also read public domain books that I would NEVER have read had they not been in an ebook.

I love the feel of a good book in hand, the touch and smell of the pages and to be able to read and be immersed within the words of a story. I enjoy going to the library and bookstores to peruse the various books, large and small, hardback or paperbook on all the shelves, then bring the books home to read at leisure. I spent many hours in the library when I was younger doing research on book reports, papers etc. Back in the day, my parents even bought us the complete set of the World Book Encyclopedia from a door-to-door salesman! My, how things have changed since every household now has computers and access to the world wide web!!!

One day I may buy a Kindle, if only to have access to all the various apps. Technology forces one to go “modern” and while it makes it easy to “carry” our books in the convenience of a slim tablet, it makes me sad to see all the bookstores and even local libraries close. I, however, will always enjoy my memories of visiting the libraries in school and the neighborhood!

    1. You mentioned World Book Encyclopedias, wow I hadn’t thought of that in years, my folks bought a set as well, but ours were another publisher, which I can’t recall at the moment, also from a door-to-door salesman…

  18. Love the perspective and the blue!
As for books…. I was given a kindle and have now got used to it. But it did take a while. It is so nice to have physical book to flick back the pages to check up on something though – so hard with the kindle. I don’t read on my ipad – too heavy.

  19. I’ve wondered what it looked like inside the new library. It is awesome! Love this scene! I do prefer a real book. I love everything about books, the cover, the pages, the smell of the paper. Especially old books that are soft with age. xx
