Last fall, my daughter and I drove into downtown Seattle
to just spend a couple hours ‘shooting.’
When boredom befalls a photographer,
what are you to do?
Well, ‘shoot’ everything, right?
: : :
Here, behind a turn of the century red brick building in an alleyway,
I was drawn by the shapes and textures of the black wrought iron fire escapes.
Walk up close, shoot at an angle,
back up and lean against the brick wall shoot straight up,
move a step, shoot, lean back a tad, shoot.
Then after coming home, sorting through the shots,
I realized there was a yellow tag on the bottom of one of the fire escape landings.
Pulling it up closer, it says ‘Fire Escape Has Deficiencies.’
Then looking even closer,
I see it was signed in 2009, by the Seattle Fire Chief and says,
‘Do Not Remove.’
Oh, that’s not a good thing.
A fire escape with deficiencies.
Whoa.

My good friend Nancy over at ‘A Rural Journal,’
has started another new meme, this one on Fridays called ‘Random 5 Friday.’
So here we go, five random facts about me.
- I’ve driven a 40′ transit style 78 passenger school bus for 14 years.
- I’m a camera rebel, and not a Canon, I shoot exclusively with Pentax gear.
- I love to wear nail polish, doing my own Shellac mani and pedicures.
- I don’t like liver and licorice.
- I love country music.
Even though my post tile is ‘deficiencies,’
I’m not admitting any to you today! Wink. Wink.
There you go!

It’s time for the Fire Chief to do a follow up.
Yeah, it’s like — fix that fire escape, don’t just put a tag on it! Lol.
Thanks for joining in on the new, ahem, meme. You are one of my favorite meme-ers. :)
Such a fun post! Am going to have to join up with this when i get back from my vacation. interesting shot of the fire escape, and so fun that you were out shooting with your daughter!
I’m with ya on #4- liver…yuck poo-ie.
Love your blog!
I will have to participate in that next Friday! Sounds like fun! Scary about that fire escape. Although in a fire, I’d be willing to take my chances, I think!
Yup, better take another route down!
I can’t even think about eating liver. Ick.
I didn’t get my first pedicure until I was 50 and haven’t had one since.
I think the Random 5 Friday is going to be fun.
Glad I don’t live in the building with the deficient fire escape!
First, let me say that I don’t know why I haven’t been commenting on your blog. I always love your photos. This new meme of Nancy’s is fun.
I love having my nails pretty but I gave up my acrylics a few years ago and now mine always look like they need a manicure.
Well, that’s enough to keep me off it!
even when i am not bored i shoot everything …
sure hope that fire escape is never needed, as obviously it’s not going to be repaired any time soon…
My camera goes where I go. I never know when I might need to take a photo :) I recently discovered a hidden gem in one of my photos.
Great shot. I can’t imagine a fire escape having deficiencies!
Now that’s not very comforting! I hope it’s just an esoteric code issue – maybe the thing’s a tad too narrow, or the stairs drop too far apart. I’d hate to think some fireman’s notes say “so rusty it’s only being held together by memories.”
WOW. Thats kinda crazy..
The sign make for an interesting post..
A school bus driver??? A brave soul you are!
I LOVE country music as well.
Hugs~
I enjoyed your five bits of information. That is scary to see on a fire escape. It’s a great photo though!
Guess they aren’t going to correct those deficiencies anytime soon! Yikes!!
I’m with you 100% on number 4! Blech!!
wow I give you credit for 14 years as a buss driver…. wow you have strenght that only a parent understands! it is a wonderful blog and the photos are so fun. nancey and her 5 facts friday has really opened me up to a new world as a newbee bloger
Too late did I read this notice as I lay on my broken back on the ground after the fire escape collapsed on me as I was trying to get away from a burglar who had broken into my apartment and hit me on the head with my very expensive guitar and then stole all my money and my girlfriend…darn!
Nice composition.
This was a fun photo…you captured a bit of fire escape history too!
Hi Madge. Whoa, that is not a good thing! But a great photo. You just turned up as my 200th follower. Thank you so much..Have a Happy Weekend..Judy
Ha! Wonder if the people who might need to use that escape know about that yellow tag?
