Full of activity, the maintenance shop for Amtrak is lit up and engines are running.
Here in the SODO (south of downtown) neighborhood of Seattle,
South Holgate Street slices the Amtrak railroad yard in half.
Passing by early this morning,
I heard the engines rumble
and saw the shop lights and was intrigued.
: : :
I don’t know about you,
but I am always drawn to industrial activities.
: : :
Perhaps, it is because I worked on Harbor Island for 20 years,
for both the Port of Seattle and
Seattle Stevedore (now Stevedoring Services of America).
Daily, I was exposed to the noise,
activities, smells and people,
who were involved in international, national
and local import and export of goods,
via ocean going ships, rail and truck.
All kinds of goods,
both as break-bulk cargo and in containers.
I never tired of looking up and seeing 500 to 1,000 foot ships glide silently into berth.
: : :
I came to love the blue-collar,
hard working areas of Seattle.

We have one of those Amtrak stations in Omaha. Nice shot. :)
I worked in public transit for 42 years and a half. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes that most people are not aware of.
Great shot! Big machines are fascinating!
Gorgeous photo! You can feel the energy!
The pulse of a harbour is fast and filled with life and action! Your picture is showing a side of the harbour that is not often seen … the railway tracks and the huge engines.
What a wonderful trackside shot Madge!
The bustling activity, the lights, sounds and smells must make it an exciting pace to visit.
We love trains. Great shot, Madge!
Love trains…love to ride them, watch them, listen to them. When I’m having a bout of insomnia, sometimes I’m lucky to hear a train passsing through town in the middle of the night…love that sound. And any industrial activity is always a draw…there’s always something interesting to watch – even if it’s some guy with a jack hammer breaking up concrete. Wish I could operate some of that machinery!
Great shot, Madge. One can be very creative with low light photography.
Thanks for hosting.
A great capture Madge …. the lighting makes all the difference and clarity is excellent. Brava!
Hope you make to to 100!
Thanks, wouldn’t that be fun!? :-)
Lots of activity here! I like the reflections.
Never taken an Amtrak ride but would sure love to.
Beautiful shot of the Amtrak train, Madge. Its a far cry from the old steam-engine trains I road in my younger years.
Thanks for hosting WTS.
Very creative, colorful and well composed photo shot for Weekly ^_^
(A Creative Harbor) ^_^
Your photo seems to capture the energy and work of the environment. There’s so much to look at!
They look huge and really impressive!
Teains are super photo ops as far as I’m concerned!
OOPS! Make that TRAINS are major photo ops!
Beautiful! You’ve really captured the heart of what is going on at the train yard and gave it life. :)
Love the busy-ness of this shot!
That’s such a fascinating shot, how on Earth did you manage to get in to take the photograph?
I was just standing on the side of the street at the rail crossing… there were no fences, security etc. Just stood and shot… it’s not always like that…
Fantastic perspective, and just outstanding!
It is a cool photograph and a cool post.
Sounds like you had an interesting job, Madge. I agree, the engineering and mechanics behind industrial activities is interesting.
that is some big engines!
I am really surprised they let you get so close with a camera. I have been inside several industrial plants as a salesman calling on them, but they never allow cameras. We at least one that the employees can not bring cell phones on site.
That is a very nice photo!
We love trains… aweosme shot!
I’m late today- but I made it – we had quite the picture taking day – ending with our new car breaking down – but all is well and I’m here to do my posts. I love your train shot – and you explanation of why you like the noise and hustle and bustle of the industrial part of the city. It gives me a new way to look at that area and appreciate it too. Thank you for making me thinkg.
Great shot! I love trains. I commute by train every day to NYC, and it’s so relaxing to just read and maybe take a nap. :) Have a nice weekend! :)
Love the shot – very cool!
I can virtually hear the sounds of all the activity going on! Trains are so iconic and part of so much history in our country’s development. Love this scene, and how interesting that you worked in this field. You’ve lived an interesting life, Madge! xx
I like trains and this is a great photo! We have a RR company located in my city and their trains are always moving around town. I like seeing different locomotives.
Wonderful capture of that beautiful train, Madge! Your POV is perfect! Oh how I wish the train would stop in Eastern Oregon again. My sister and I rode from La Grande to Seattle more than 30 years ago, and it was a wonderful ride.

This is fine, Madge, so fine. I enjoyed reading about why you took the photo and about your past experiences. I don’t have any like that, but I too am drawn to industrial activities. My Daddy and my brother could figure out how stuff works and how to fix stuff. Perhaps I have that in me, too, but it didn’t get developed because I was a girl–that’s the way it used to be, back in the day. Boys got to go under the hood of the family car while girls got to wash it, if they were lucky enough to have their Daddy let them.
Beautiful! I am always drawn to industrial scenes too! :)
You have such a beautiful blog with great articles and awesome pictures! You are skilled at photography! My mommy Léia and I are delighted by this article today, you created an interesting meme ‘WEEKLY TOP SHOT’ and mom will try to join you!
Have a nice week ahead!
Here in Belgium is snowing today and I think I will be busy with my naps!

It does look very interesting. I like how you’ve gone for a picture when it’s getting dark like me :O)
Thanks for hosting.
Such a great ‘behind the scenes’ shot. I love the bustle and sense of people just passing through at stations etc.
Those trains and tracks make an interesting composition. Last night i watched Hugo- another example of beauty in machines!
Hi Madge, it does look very interesting in there! Great shot :)
Great shot, so much colour and activity x
Wow, Madge!!! I just spent some time in your gallery and really enjoyed seeing your scenes from our PNW. I have never been in that part of the country and your photos were just amazing. LOVE the fall shots…such pretty colors there. Thanks for stopping by my blog, too. I added a link to you on my blog.
Yes, a beautiful picture. Wonderful light.
Those look like wonderful trains, nothing so hi tech looking in the UK!
The photo reveals so much life even though it’s still!
Not around here, you won’t find an Amtrak…we have the old ones …:)JP
great shot from the workshop. :)
