Maintenance – Weekly Top Shot #66

Amtrak Maintenance Shop - Seattle WA

Full of activity, the maintenance shop for Amtrak is lit up and engines are running.

Here in the SODO (south of downtown) neighborhood of Seattle,

South Holgate Street slices the Amtrak railroad yard in half.

Passing by early this morning,

I heard the engines rumble

and saw the shop lights and was intrigued.

:     :     :

I don’t know about you,

but I am always drawn to industrial activities.

:     :     :

Perhaps, it is because I worked on Harbor Island for 20 years,

for both the Port of Seattle and

Seattle Stevedore (now Stevedoring Services of America).

Daily, I was exposed to the noise,

activities, smells and people,

who were involved in international, national

and local import and export of goods,

via ocean going ships, rail and truck.

All kinds of goods,

both as break-bulk cargo and in containers.

I never tired of looking up and seeing 500 to 1,000 foot ships glide silently into berth.

:      :      :

I came to love the blue-collar,

hard working areas of Seattle.

  1. Love trains…love to ride them, watch them, listen to them. When I’m having a bout of insomnia, sometimes I’m lucky to hear a train passsing through town in the middle of the night…love that sound. And any industrial activity is always a draw…there’s always something interesting to watch – even if it’s some guy with a jack hammer breaking up concrete. Wish I could operate some of that machinery!

  2. I am really surprised they let you get so close with a camera. I have been inside several industrial plants as a salesman calling on them, but they never allow cameras. We at least one that the employees can not bring cell phones on site.

That is a very nice photo!

  3. I’m late today- but I made it – we had quite the picture taking day – ending with our new car breaking down – but all is well and I’m here to do my posts. I love your train shot – and you explanation of why you like the noise and hustle and bustle of the industrial part of the city. It gives me a new way to look at that area and appreciate it too. Thank you for making me thinkg.

  4. I can virtually hear the sounds of all the activity going on! Trains are so iconic and part of so much history in our country’s development. Love this scene, and how interesting that you worked in this field. You’ve lived an interesting life, Madge! xx

  7. This is fine, Madge, so fine. I enjoyed reading about why you took the photo and about your past experiences. I don’t have any like that, but I too am drawn to industrial activities. My Daddy and my brother could figure out how stuff works and how to fix stuff. Perhaps I have that in me, too, but it didn’t get developed because I was a girl–that’s the way it used to be, back in the day. Boys got to go under the hood of the family car while girls got to wash it, if they were lucky enough to have their Daddy let them.
