Moon Over Seattle

Moon Over Seattle Space Needle

Lunar illumination, bold and bright over the Seattle Skyline at night. Surely you looked at this image and thought, wow the moon is huge! Confession is good for the soul, so I do, I confess this image is the combination of two separate shots. Combining a large moon and a regular size skyline image is something I have always wanted to try, but I’ve never taken the time to learn how to do it. So today was the day that I did, and I love the result!

Last night my daughter and I drove into the Lake Union neighborhood to Gas Works Park and shot a number of images, including playing with light painting, which was very fun. The moon was bright and the atmosphere was crisp and clear causing the skyline and city lights to twinkle and the colors to pop. In case you’d like to know about the exposures, the moon was shot at 300mm at 1/180 second at f/8 and the skyline at 55mm and a 10 second exposure at f/8 – then combined in Photoshop CS5 using layers and merging.

  1. I love the way the moon looks in the photo – great work! Wasn’t yesterday the best weather – I got a lot of good heron and duck photos yesterday – just missed a bald eagle taking off from a field by about 5 seconds.
