Hard times in local Hooverville… The last few days have been a test for many families around the Pacific Northwest. The we received our annual snowfall plus some with week’s worth of snow, that in some places was nearly 30 inches deep and the ice storm to top it off. Fallen trees causing property damage and downed power lines with more than 250,000 customers still without power. For some with medical needs it is very difficult. Some grocery stores without power had to dump milk and meat which could not be kept at the proper temperature. Our Governor declared a state of emergency so the National Guard could be activated if needed. Some buildings’ roofs have collapsed, thousands of vehicle accidents have been responded to by WSP and at least one death has been attributed to the storm.
Even though it has been raining most of the day and warmed up to around 40° F, there is still a lot of snow of the ground. The weatherman is calling for 20-45mph winds tonight and with so many unstable trees and limbs there is the possibility for more damage and power outages. Then there is the warning of flooding looming over the region as this melts and runs off into drains, streams and rivers.
Today, I’ll be leaving snowy photos behind with one last snowy shot taken several days ago. Everyone so enjoyed the last time I posted a shot of this 1930 Chrysler (viewed here) that I drove by and took a couple shots of it in the snow. The local homeowner used this now dilapidated old car in his garden as yard art. It reminds me of the Hoovervilles of the 1930s Great Depression era with the outhouse and wash hanging on the clothesline. For me, the snow deepens the mood of ‘hard times.’ Speaking of ‘hard times’ I’ll close this post with the chorus from the Civil War era song by Stephen Foster called ‘Hard Times Come Again No More.’
Tis the song, the sigh of the weary,
Hard Times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door;
Oh hard times come again no more.
Legendary gospel singer, Mavis Staples went to Nashville in 2004 to record “Hard Times Come Again No More.’ She has a beautiful voice, you can listen to it on YouTube here.

The lights of the lantern and the old car really makes this shot come alive. Another wonderful shot, Madge!
this is my most favorite of every photo you have ever posted here. I LOVE IT!!! I really do. i love the car, the clothes, the outhouse, the snow, the composition…. I just plain LOVE IT
it is really a beautiful shot! i am sorry for all the troubles your area is going through. power outages can be bad enough, but with snow and ice making travel difficult… such weather extremes, once again…
Reminds me of Studs Terkel’s Hard Times too. Great outhouse too.
I absolutely love this! Everything just works together so well.
Great photo – and makes me stop and think about how good I have it now.
I agree, great shot! And the only good thing about snow storms on the coast is that the snow doesn’t last long. With any luck your area will be back to normal in a day or two and you’ll all be talking about the “storm of oh-twelve”.
I came back to send your post to several friends and found i looked at the photo and did not even click on the read more. so sorry to hear all this and hope all is well soon. the song on youtube is beautiful and the words so true. i looked at the other photo and still vote this one as my all time favorite.
Your region has truly been battered. I do hope things turn around soon. Stay warm! Love the photo – it’s gorgeous. And “Hard Times Come Again No More” is one of my faves I have several versions stored in my iPod.
This looks like it belongs in Alabama…well, maybe not the snow!
wow! LOVE the photo!!! That is amazing! You are a fabulous photographer!!! It really does tell a story!
oh i remember when you posted the original, loved it, and this one!
There are so many precious little vignettes in this photo — the laundry hanging on the line, the lantern, the moon on the outhouse… spectacular capture, Madge. :)
Ah the old days! Great shot.
This is a wonderful image. I love how they use the car, laundry and outhouse as art. You’ve captured it perfectly with snow and without.
Excellent photograph full of character, well worth the drive back for a snowy shot!
I love the car snow covered…Nice
Love, love this photo!!!!
This is totally too cool!!! That car was meant to have a top hat and tails of white….sitting next to his castle in the sky.
So glad you went back and took more photos, or I would have missed this one. smiles: sharon
I remember the original post on this one… I jotted that old saying down & still have it here now… It’s been the subject of several conversations here at work! =)
An amazing shot Madge- to my English eyes it looks like it’s straight out of a Garrison Keilor Tale from Lake Wobegon.
