Chehalis Tug on Wishkah River

Chehalis Tug on Wishkah River in Hoquiam, WA

Sitting in dry dock on the north bank of the Wishkah River in Hoquiam is the tug, Chehalis. Just beside her hull, moored on the river, and still afloat is another tug, she is a very small one, but brightly painted and her wheelhouse looks like a one-man affair.

I believe this facility is the former Smith Grant-Porter Shipyard, it looks in a state of disrepair and it was quite difficult to tell how much business is being conducted there these days.   Makes one wonder beyond the difficulties of our economy these last few years, what may have befallen this company that probably served the maritime repair needs of this coastal community on Grays Harbor for many years.

  1. This is a fabulous image… there’s so much to like about it… the lines, shapes, colors, the reflection, not to mention the subject, this adorable little tugboat next to a larger one… almost a mother and child image and who isn’t moved by that?

  2. Thanks for stopping by. I just missed an opportunity to get acquainted with a couple who worked with a Cruise Ship in your area. Not sure what the set up was,but I think they may have dissolved partnership by now. I’ll never see that part of the country, so it’s great to view it through the blogs of others. Thanks for sharing your part of the world.

Wonderful shot, Madge! Great composition and great subject. The maritime industries are terribly hard hit and it’s heartbreaking. They’re auctioning beautiful old working boats out here on the Olympic Peninsula because people can’t keep them. They’re an important part of our heritage and it’s such a loss.
