Steptoe: a small unincorporated town in rural Whitman County, with one gas station, one K-8 grade school, a post office and with a population of about 180 souls.

Here,
with the warm, very early morning light
falling against the old asbestos siding,
the doors are closed.

At one time this was a grocery,
you can see what were Pepsi signs on both corners of the building,
have been painted over and advertise
furniture and antiques.

~Blessings Always~
I love old places like this.
I have always loved the ‘one-horse’ towns. Disappearing here. Fast.
Wonderful old building, it looks like a great place to visit. I love the old towns like this – there are so few anymore.
Madge,
I bet the ole store could tell some good stories. I noticed the Pepsi right away. I’m surprised that a town of 180 people has a school and posts office. A few years ago the USPS shut down a bunch of post offices, including the one at Prairie City. Out small town (350 people) is dealing with a School Bond issue. The bond was denied last November and up for a second vote in April. Talk about a hot button issue.
Rosie is a year and a half. For the last few weeks we have seen or heard coyotes close to the building site. Sunday morning when we went out to chore the yearlings were distressed. We saw 2 coyotes eyeballing the calves this morning. J got a shot at them and they ran off. We are wondering if the coyotes have something to do with Rosie’s odd behavior. I don’t like the thought of them in with the pairs and just over the hill from our house.
These kinds of places are always so interesting…imagine the tales they hold!…:)JP
Nice find
Love this old building.Looks like it has fallen out of the old West.
