Play :plā/: (verb) meaning: to engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose.

It is said by a professor of Wildlife Science
at the University of Washington, John Marzluff,
that crows
(of the Cordvid family of birds)
are among the few on earth
that play.

Here,
while driving home from work a couple years ago,
I saw a huge ‘murder’ of crows playing
in the tops of the Douglas fir trees next to the local freeway.
I happened to have my camera with me that day for some reason
(I didn’t normally take my camera gear to work),
stopped and shot a number of images of the crows,
swooping, soaring, diving, landing and taking off,
all with great noise
and joy.

I love to watch these intelligent creatures.
I didn’t know that about crows, but I have seen squirrels playing like cats. It’s a joy to watch.
Oh, and I hope you’re feeling better. No fun being sick, but a lot of people seem to be down with stuff right now.
Crows are wonderful to watch. Love the photo. Just don’t ever start feeding them. They call all their friends and before you know it, you are hosting a ‘murder’ of your property. :) I speak from experience. Although I loved them….
Was it PD James who wrote A Murder of Crows? or am I thinking outside my head again, Madge?
They really are fun to watch.
They are held in high regards by aboriginal peoples.
I have learned they’re intelligent and alert you to the presence of other critters… feathered or furred.
Nice capture Madge! I do hope you feel your strength is returning but it is often inevitable that we will experience some challenging days as we mend. I reminder that it takes time to heal.
i love crows but didn’t know they were so playful! i’m sorry you are still not feeling well :(
A fine capture of these crows. Interesting information about their play.
Fun shot. I’ve been leaving peanuts outside every morning for both squirrels and crows. They seem to know when “peanut” time is and it’s so fun to watch them scrambling to grab a peanut and fly off with it before another crow gets there first.
great capture. i love big gatherings of birds of any kind.
i love watching crows. such intelligent birds.
i hope you can feel better soon.
