Autumn colors, infuse a rural road with wonder.
: : :
Here,
a one-lane asphalt road
winds up through the tall, broad canopied and brilliant yellow maple trees
from the Green River Valley below to the hilltop above,
curving around with snake-like bends following the folds of the earth,
clinging tenaciously to the steep floor of the woods to
escape sliding into the ravines below.
: : :
Driving slowly,
steering first right, then left, and right again,
slower as the grade increases
and I glide through the shadows of the soon to be leafless woods.
: : :
These little known rural roads
are not heavily traveled
and most like them have been graded,
widened and made to look like every other road
that allow drivers
to speed along to their destination
without slowing
to see
the road
before
them.
