Fountain pen inks, made by a variety of companies in a rainbow of colors.
Don’t you love getting packages in the mail?
I do.
: : :
Yesterday, in the mailbox was a small brown box.
I wondered what it was.
I had almost forgotten a recent purchase of a bottle of new ink.
: : :
But this isn’t just any ink, it is an anniversary ink by a company called J. Herbin.
It was formulated in honor of their 340th anniversary in 2010.
They have been in business since 1670, three-hundred-forty-three years.
Wow, 343 years, that’s a very long time to be making ink, don’t you agree?
: : :
This is the most expensive ink I’ve ever purchased, $22 for a bottle.
This lovely ink is a rusty, blood red with a shimmer of gold.
It truly is the most beautiful ink I’ve ever had the pleasure of writing with.
So beautiful in fact, that I ordered a second bottle after testing this first one.
The bottle is beautiful with a faux red wax cap and a real gold wax seal.
Of course,
as soon as I opened the box and bottle,
I had to ink a pen and write a few words.
This calligraphy isn’t intended to be pretty,
just a couple scribbles.
To see the ink
in its red
glory.
: : :
This second image has a texture applied to it,
I’ve never added a texture before,
This one was of spilled ink and paper.
Interesting isn’t it?

That is beautiful ink! Gives new meaning to blood red! Love the bottle too with the wax seal!
You do calligraphy??? Wow! I’m so envious! My best long-time friend also does it…Uncial was always my favorite “style” so she would send me examples. (We knew each other briefly in college and then I took my first teaching job in her home town, where she returned the next year to teach at the same high school as I! When I went to Micronesia four years later, we started a correspondence…handwritten, then typed…when I returned to the States in ’75, we switched to computers…and now we e-mail, but not nearly so often. She always hand-addressed the envelope in calligraphy.) This is a wonderful purchase, Madge, and the fact that you will actually use it is even better! I tend to buy things I like, just to look at. The colors in your beautifully composed photo are simply wonderful. Welcome to the world of textures. ;-)
That is pricey, but I would guess it would go a long ways and lets face it, when you want something bad enough, there is always a way to justify it – can I hear a ‘amen’?! I really like the subtle bump the texture adds to your picture – well done!
If that’s just scribbles then I’ll be damned. That’s beautiful. Just the bottle of ink is gorgeous.
Thank you so much for joining in today. xo
oh Madge! I love your new ink! Is just beautiful! I really also enjoyed seeing your lovely pen. I am a big fan of pens and ink, and bought several when i was in Italy the last time. You did a great job on your first textured photo too, but the original SOOC is also gorgeous. Will have to check in to that ink company! Love it!
What an interesting post…I took 2 classes in calligraphy and practiced and practiced and actually became pretty good, then stopped practicing and fell out of doing it well. I think it is a beautiful art and so happy there are still some that are practicing this lovely art along with a true appreciation of beautiful inks.
Dearest Madge,
This is so refreshing to find at the end of a long day another ‘real ink’ lover! Although not writing calligraphy but fountain pen, I do appreciate this very much.
Enjoy your red ink bottles till the last drop.
Hugs to you,
Mariette
Good Evening Madge! Yes, I love getting packages in the mail and how interesting about the ink. I love the texture on the second image. I don’t know what it is about texture but I enjoy it.. :)
so many lovely things in your image, love the ink bottle.
It is so cool that you have rediscovered calligraphy. You are good at it now, so with some practice, you will be unbelievable. To be good at anything, you need good tools, so I don’t criticize your purchase of fine ink. Have fun!
Nice shot.
Your picture works amazingly with the texture! Gorgeous!
My first time here from Texture Tuesday’s link-up, and I’ll have to check out the other memes you mentioned, too! Your images here, both before and after, are really beautiful, Madge! Love your ‘scribbles’ there, too! :) Now I never really thought much about ink, other then the fact that pens run out of it so fast these days, but this is very interesting about the company you purchased it from! So glad I found your blog … my hubby used to live up in Puget Sound … he was a logger, too, and also worked with the local fishermen. It’s been quite a few years, but he would enjoy seeing and reading about life there … he misses it! We’ve thought about driving cross country for a visit … the Midwest is nice enough, but just doesn’t compare to the Pacific Northwest area! We’ll look forward to seeing your photos and following you here! :)
What a lovely new ink and, of course, the bottle itself is gorgeous!! Great job on the texture edit! It’s addictive, now you’ll be hooked like so many of us! ;)
I love calligraphy and used to dabble in it years ago. I can understand your excitement about getting a new ink! NIcely textured photo. Hope you have hours of fun ahead of you with these two fantastic things to do!
Madge, I am impressed with your calligraphy ‘scribbles’ – beautiful! And, the bottle itself is wonderful!
Lovely ink in a lovely bottle !
Nice texture work, it turned out great on your photo !
Thanks for visiting my blog,
Sylvia
Very cool!
Nice composition. And your fancy writing is certainly prettier than anything I can do!
Love your scribbles! I think both photos, with and without texture, are great!
Beautiful color of ink and the jar it came with is gorgeous! I love the way you’ve edit a texture to your photo, it just adds the right amount of vintage look to it. Playing with photoshop and textures are a fun thing to do, don’t you think?
… the colors, the texture, the anticipation – GORGEOUS!
We love the ink bottle. Calligraphy is a lost art. :)
Thanks for visiting us at Flickr. Happy Women’s Day and happy Friday.
Oh, I love the texture! It was fun to experiment, wasn’t it?
I love antique things, it’s hard to believe that company has made it this long! Amazing. My grandfather whom loved to right hand written letters with old fashioned ink pens would have loved this.
And I LOVE the view in your header. Did you take that picture?
Yes, I did, just after dawn in the town of Gig Harbor… Thanks!
oh, this is beautiful! love the image, love the calligraphy and love that gorgeous bottle! so happy you shared with us ‘in the studio’ this week!
