Night Lights – Weekly Top Shot #69

Post Alley - Union Street Entrance - Seattle WA

Night lights, creating a sense of safety by illuminating dark areas where one might walk.

Of course the lights and bright neon here at the Union Street entrance to Post Alley,

just south of Seattle’s famous Pike Place Market,

are lit not only for safety, but for enjoyment.

I loved the play of light and shadow,

and the flow of colors reflected upon buildings,

bricks and street.

:    :    :

I’ve never suffered from nyctophobia,

fear of the dark, but many do.

That fear can persist

well beyond the childhood years.

We have two night lights,

one in our bathroom,

and one in the kitchen,

to cast a bit of light,

if one gets up in the night.

:    :    :

There was a time a few years ago though

that I would wake up from a sound sleep,

in a state of being petrified.

Afraid to breathe,

for fear someone was in our bedroom

and would hear me.

Those episodes lasted for about a year

and then vanished.

Odd, don’t you agree?

Do you suffer from odd sleep disturbances

from time to time?

  1. I just love all the neon lights you share! :)
We have a couple of night lights too, just so we can see if we get up in the middle of the night. I used to be VERY afraid of the dark when I lived in the city. Now that I live in the country, I walk around outside at night without even thinking about it!

Hi Madge, I like the colors, shades and perspective in your picture ~ I can easily imagine shabby alleys and the uncertainty, that might follow … We have a dim light at the bathroom at nights – also when staying over at new places.

  3. Great shot – love the colors and shine to it. Just last night I woke up and heard someone opening and closing the refrigerator and walking in the kitchen – and yet there was no one out of bed in our house – it was a little frightening since it was so clear, but I was able to reason myself into going back to sleep. Mostly I just sleep through the night – for which I am thankful.

Again – my link is solid black – not sure why that happens – I do the same thing each week and sometimes it works and sometimes not.

  4. I love the colors in this shot. I’m a little bit afraid of the dark – mostly just not being able to see. I’m glad you got over waking up terrified – I think I’d have to sleep with a light on, and my husband would not like that!

  5. Sometimes I have those paralyzing night terrors where I can hear breathing and feel someone in the room with me. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does it’s terrifying. Glad yours left you! Thank you so much for hosting this wonderful meme. I get to meet so many wonderful bloggers. :)

  6. Great framing!
I love how the green of the sign picks up that green in the architecture to the right.
Must agree with the reader who said you have the best signage in your city – makes for wonderful shots and you do it well!

When I was young I was afraid of the dark. Not so much afraid of the dark anymore as cautious of what’s in it. :)

  7. Madge, I am trying to get caught up with blogging. We had computer issues last week. For some reason your blog would not come up on my Kindle Fire. I missed your posts.

Congratulations on starting up Rurality. I will be joining! From a real life Country Girl, I love the enthusiasm for our lifestyle that you and your followers share. Thank You.

Working on a blog post to link up with Top Shot tomorrow.

  8. Oh, night lights…in almost every room because when I get up at night I want to be able to see without turning on glaring lights. Night lights are ever so much easier on the eyes. Of course it means I almost never re-arrange the furniture -grin.
Since Dave died, sleep disturbances are normal and they stink.
