Nothing tastes better sometimes than a cold chocolate milkshake, with whipped cream on top.

Over Spring Break last year,
I was on my way to stay in Colfax, in the Palouse for a week of taking photos
around the premier wheat growing region of southeastern Washington and central western Idaho.
: : :
It’s about a six hour drive to Colfax from Seattle, and I needed to stop to stretch my legs.
I was alternately standing in the cold wind and pale sunshine and walking around a gravel parking lot,
when a well used pickup pulling an equally well used four horse trailer stopped across the street from me.
: : :
A family of four got out of the pickup, mom, dad and two elementary age boys.
It seemed obvious to me, they were on their way home from a Sunday afternoon ride.
My good friend Karen at ‘Rough String Ranch‘ in the beautiful high desert
of eastern Oregon said they were probably coming home from working cows, possibly branding.
Here, they stopped at the local convenience store on Main Street in Washtucna,
a small eastern Washington town with a population of 208.
Cowboy hats and especially the dad’s clothing caught my eye.
Grabbing my Pentax K7 out of the passenger seat of my Honda Element, I waited.
A couple minutes later they emerged,
the boys with milk shakes in hand, dad looking at me rather intently, mom trailing behind.
Quickly click, click, click. I got off a couple fast shots.
A minute or two later, the pickup roared to life and they pulled out onto Highway 26 heading east.

I loved the thought of their rural family outing.

This is such a sweet photo. I love it.
You are quiet brave to shoot strangers, especially when you’ve been “caught” by dad. I still have a problem doing that and I wish I didn’t. I an always timid and scared they will yell at me! It kills me that I am missing out on such lovely shots as this. Well done! Thanks for hosting. xo
Great shot! Nothing beats a milkshake!
… even for these three buckaroos.
You gotta love a man in chaps. The photo is so all American.
Thanks for hosting Rurality, Madge. Your readers share a lot of neat pictures that are rural at heart.
As everyone who has already commented, Madge, this is a most precious photo…it says so much!
wonderful capture .. i dont follow pioneer woman but friends do so i get to hear about her … yawn … but that photo made me think of her family ..
oh i also wanted to tell you happy anniversary…i tried to the other day but it kept saying your blog was offline…happened again today just a bit ago too?
I’m guessing the boys really look forward to riding, especially if this is a regular treat!
really cute! :) thanks for hosting, madge!
What a sweet shot this is, Madge.
Have a wonderful day!
Aw, it’s too early to set me to craving a milkshake! Great picture.
Wonderful capture! That youngest one is sure enjoying his milkshake. ;-)
I do love photos such as these, and I hope one day to make such a capture myself! I’m joining with you this week to see if I can keep up. When blog hops grow so large, I can’t make it around to everyone’s posts.
Fantastic photography ~ really special ~ very creative work ~ thanks for hosting this ‘hop’ ~ ^_^
Works for me! Nice catch.
I love, love so much this photograph. That is one great family. True cowboys! Excellent and stunning image!
Hugs from Kaya
Oh, to be a child again . . .
Such a great shot.
You seem to have lots of luck finding great shots. But, I think you MAKE your luck happen. Good job….
Superb delicious picture … :)
I would say they had been working cows…possibly branding that day. Funny…I have a wild rag exactly the same as the dad! Great candid shot. Thanks for hosting Madge~
BTW…couldn’t get your badge to work for me today :(
What a neat picture! Glad the dad didn’t chase you down :)
Nice capture! Great treat for them after their ride.
What a neat candid shot. I love the Dad’s get up!
He must be a real cowboy and his boys are adorable! Great shot.
Dad definitely has that Great Basin Buckaroo look goin’ on! You have to wonder what he was thinking of the crazy lady taking pictures of his kids! LOL!!
A candid, of a slice of life we all relate to♫
A great photo showing a small part of their everyday life!
I love that shot. It’s a perfect blend of old and modern.
Great Dad…alert, observant and taking care of his family!
Oh man, I just love chocolate milk shakes! Well, anything chocolate really :^)
I love absolutely everything about this shot!
What a great shot. A milkshake sounds good.
Hi Madge, Great picture of the ‘cowboys’…. We see that quite a bit around here –and even moreso when I lived in Texas!!!!!!
Hugs,
Betsy
Great capture … I like to “freeze” moments like this, but seldom dare to shoot pictures right in front of people. Guess hiding with a big lense is the right thing for me *lol*
I had no idea Americans still dressed as cowboys! (outside of Lefty and Dusty on A Prairie Home Companion!)
Will look out for some when I’m Stateside later this year!
I love that shot Madge, have a nice weekend!
Your work is always so incredibly beautiful. I follow your blog but this is my first time linking up to the hop. I’m sharing a photo of geese on our pond that is part of a post about the first twelve months on our homestead. Thank you for hosting.
Love the cowboy hats!
That makes me smile! :)
Great shot! However, Cowboy Dad looks a bit miffed at having his photo taken. You’re brave!
This is the first time I’ve signed up for the Rurality Blog Hop. How fun!
Great shot of these cowboys! Never see images like this in Philly! LOL!
That is a great capture. I wonder what flavors they got.
