A slow economy creates difficult times for local, small businesses.
Located in the heart of the small eastern Washington town of Lind,
this cafe would have been a place to gather
for a cup of coffee or a bite to eat.
A place where among long time friends,
a roll of the dice might be used
to determine who was picking up the bill.
: : :
This little local cafe looks like the type of place
my husband and I would seek out
to enjoy a meal on the road.
: : :
It is sad when any venture doesn’t pan out
and a business closes.
But losing a local business in a small rural town
like Lind (574 souls) is devastating.
Lind had the only theater around for miles, it closed.
In 2011, the town’s only bank closed as well.
There is a cash machine available,
but to speak to a teller
you’ll have to drive at least forty minutes
to do that these days.
Closed.
That’s a rough six-letter word.

sounds like a good place for home-cooking, pie and coffee. or at least it was…
thanks for hosting, madge!
Awe, that’s too bad it closed. Local places like this are usually the best places to have a great meal.
Yes, “closed” is a rough word. And it can be seen far to frequently. That is a great old sign. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Wonderful photography ~ sad when things end ~ times change and letting go is the name of the game ~

Ick. “Closed” is all too common these days. A beautiful picture, nonetheless. I am new here, and happy to have discovered your beautiful blog. Thanks for sharing.
We see that ALL too often here in SE Oregon~
It’s happening all over- all these little mom and pop stores shutting down…sad.

It is so sad when businesses are forced to close. Really cool shot of the sign :) Thanks for hosting this fun blog hop, Madge!
It is sad when these things happen in small towns. On our trip to Wisconsin last summer we noticed that just before a small town, or a series of small towns, the big oil companies put in a 12 pump station and added a fast food place to it – and that killed the small towns. We really had to hunt for a small town cafe, when 15 years ago there would have been 5 or 6 in any small town, all serving deliciously inexpensive home cooked food. That is what greed does – drives out the little guy until there is nothing left. Sad
I put in my entry the way it says to – and it continually comes out black. I haven’t had this trouble on other blogs – is there some advice you can give me?
I’ve fixed it for you… are you selecting to crop your image from the web capture?? I’ll email you…
It is a shame when small businesses have to close … it is happening everywhere.
i love their sign..shame it went out of business :(
Hi Madge, how sad this little cafe closed. You captured a great image of the sign. Those types of cafes are charming, and I hope it can be reopened some day.. Love your new rurality meme! I’m linking in for the first time with some rooftop views of snow. Have a great day :)
“Closed” is a rough word and seems to be all too common these days. :(
A good-looking sign. What a shame the diner, bank, and movie theater were all forced to close. All too common, for sure.

It is such a shame to see the small communities lose their independence. It’s a great shot!
We’ve lost a lot of convenience, dreams, and our heritage to this economic meltdown. Pardon my interjecting politics, but it seems like the “little” guys are the ones paying the price for someone else’s greed and ineptitude.
… but cool pic :)
It’s sad to see these local treasures close down. :(
This is sad – it’s the type of place I tend to seek out. I love the small mom & pop local businesses. There is something special, and unfortunately more and more rare about them.
That is sad :( My husband and I were just saying today how many old mills in our town are closed. The buildings that were magnificent at one time, now stand lonely and worn.
That’s beautiful shot Madge, I’ll try to get more rural shots on the blog soon :-)
It is sad, Madge. Here’s hoping things turn around for everyone sooner rather than later.
we all lose when a small business closes.
I love old places…too bad it closed. My daughter and I found a quaint little diner and I mean LITTLE…but the aroma was overpowering as soon as we opened the door to enter! It was wonderful!!!!…:)JP
We’ve seen a lot of “Closed” or “Going Out Of Business” in the 12 years since we’ve back here. Pretty sad.
This post made me so sad….I hate to see this happen…but girl this sign rocks!!
LOVE that sign!
Old signs, little family restaurants, small town flavor – I’m happy I grew up being a part of it but so sad it’s all but gone.
Madge, it truly is sad to see things fail. I guess that why I am not a lover of Wal-mart. It chases away the little businesses. Having once owned a small business I’m all for the little guy! What a fun idea for a hop. I will have to do a post that will fit in and join in sometime.
hugs,
Jann
What a great old sign.
Difficult days, sad days. Thanks for this poignant post.
That’s a great sign and a wonderful photo, Madge, but a sad ‘sign’ of the times. Living in a small town, myself, I see this happening all the time. My very favorite gift shop closed this past summer, and the little cafe I loved also closed. I am lucky my bank is still there, but barely holding on. I try to support the local businesses when I can.
It’s a classy sign. Where’s the American Pickers when you need them?
that sign is fabulous .. so weathered .. so perfect ..
It’s difficult to make a go of any business in this economy. Sad this one didn’t thrive.
Thanks for participating in the Boost-My-Blog Party Madge!
Aw, it was a cute place.
Thanks for participating in the Boost My Blog party!
nice! i love these old, weathered signs. :)
Another great shot.
It is hard, to watch small towns die, one piece at a time. Too many are disappearing.
Hi Madge Happy Valentines Day. That is sad but I love that old sign the colours the wear incredible shot. B
Hi there – I am a Pacific Northwest native, California transplant. Great image of that sign and yes, sad, that the small businesses are suffering so much.
Popped in from the Boost My Blog Valentine’s hop ~

I am not sure that the population of my home town was, but it was s.m.a.l.l. and in recent years a shadow of its former self. It is indeed so sad when businesses shut down, I am put to mind the of scene in ‘You’ve Got Mail’ when she closed the book store around the corner with memories of being there with her mom. Sad!
Ohhhh I was too late to make my contribution here.. bummer – then you can click on my name instead if you like to see. Thanks Madge for all – Hugs
