Barn cats earn their keep on most farmsteads.
Here a dark calico cat,
looks down the driveway with alarm
as I stop to capture the attractive red barn
on this farm near Steptoe Butte
in the Palouse region of southeastern Washington state.
She looked like she would flee if I took just one step closer.
: : :
When I was a kid we always had barn cats,
which we loved and cared for.
My sister though,
somehow managed to get past the ‘no pets in the house’ rule,
and got her cat to become the only one who came indoors.
He was a big fluffy orange cat,
named Lilly.
Lilly??
Really.

What a super shot….love the cat, love the barn. Have a good week!
ha, he’s a little guard cat! love the sunshine! we had a barn cat when we lived in missouri, his name was cheetah. we took him with us when we moved to georgia. i let him out of his crate in the backyard and he wandered out into the woods and never came back. i should have left him in missouri. maybe he went back. you hear of animals doing that! he was our first and only cat. he was pretty cool. thought he was a dog :D my husband is allergic to cats and growing up, my brother was so never had them. we are dog people. you’ve met my ozzy right?!
hey .. whatchya doing there?
A boy cat named Lilly? hmmm! Beautiful red & white barn & beautiful calico, too!
Thank you in advance for joining =)
What a great shot. Love all the color. We have a boy cat named Belle and a girl cat named Tiger. I guess when kids name pets they don’t follow any gender rules. :D
i sure miss mine…
the mice are starting to move in, too…
I do enjoy my neighbor’s cat keeping our yard and garden free from garden eating rabbits. However, they displease me when they take out the songbirds.
Barn cats are worth their weight in gold! We finally got one after the pack rats chewed up two of hubby’s saddles. Grrrr…
Yep, barn cats earn their keep and then some. Lilly must have been a great cat to have broken the rules and gotten away with it! Even his name was special.
I love seeing cats out and about…my mom hated cats. One didn’t dare step foot in her house. and she would really not like that I have 3 cats inside and that they are into everything.
I loved our barn cats as we were growing up as well. A precious memory of growing up ona a farm.
That’s an adorable calico, and definitely wary of you and your camera! Lilly – haha, cute name for an orange tiger. I used to have a black lab named Lacey – definitely not an appropriate name for a big black dog, but then we let our then 5-year-old daughter name her.
Great shot. Lilly? Great name too.
Barn kitties are the best.
I’ve gotten past the no pets rule in my house 3 times. My husband always caves….eventually.
Great shot of the “barn” cat. I have seen some great looking barn cats that really look like they work hard for that title. Love all those bright vivid colors. Thanks, Madge, for your sweet comments…really appreciate the kindness!!
We had lots of barn cats when we lived on the farm. The kids were not suppose to bring them in the house but they often sneaked them in. Lilly much have been a very special cat.
what a handsome kitty! He looks like he’d pass for the watch dog, too! ha.
Every barn needs a barn cat–or two, or three, or ten! Lovely photo!
Cute mouser.
You always get such great shots. Love the cat.
Thanks for dropping by.
We had one farm cat that managed to con her way into the house. The other four just sit and look in the window and make me feel guilty! Lol.
Such a pretty little cat! I grew up on a farm and we had barn cats too. One was always trying to sneak into the house.
He really loves the paparazzi, doesn’t he? Great shot!
Cool shot Madge- the cat is sure checking you out..
Wonderful shot of Miss Kitty. Its purrfect.
Your photos are beautiful style. You photograph everyday objects and make them look unique! I enjoyed looking at them – love the cat and the barn.
Have to admint…I’m not much of a cat person HOWEVER, the more photos of see of these creatures, the more I like them. Perhaps, one day, I’ll have a barn cat…God knows there are plenty of field mice around the neighborhood!
Nice looking cat! Great shot.
Great photo!
Cute kitty! Thanks for eating the mice!
