Early morning, just an hour or so after official sunrise, Colony Creek empties into Samish Bay shrouded in pastel softness. Of the more than two hundred creeks in Skagit County, Colony Creek is one which provides a safe haven for late season spawning Chum Salmon. Adult Chum can reach over three feet in length and weigh as much as 45 pounds, that’s a lot of steaks! Salmon is my favorite seafood, I like it best baked in foil with a few slices of onion laid on top and a squeeze or two of fresh lemon. The pastel scene here was so peaceful, Colony Creek’s mouth at low tide exposing tide flats, Samish Bay on Puget Sound, and a freighter at anchor, sometimes it doesn’t get any better than this.
Just about an eighth mile upstream from this view, I was standing beside the creek, watching Blue Herons fly overhead and listening to the salmon splash and churn the murky water as they made their way further towards their spawning grounds. While watching and listening to this bucolic scene, I heard a dog barking. Then hearing the barking getting louder, closer, I looked up to see a huge blond dog bearing down on me. Before I could make the decision to bail back into my vehicle, the dog arrived with exuberance and joy. Quickly turning around and running the hundred yards or so from whence he came, I returned my attention to the creek. Again hearing the dog running towards me I looked up to see what at first I thought was a yellow tennis ball in his mouth, but when it was spit out on my boots, it was a large yellow apple, with which we played fetch until there was nothing left to throw. I love the spontaneous happy things that happen while out and about with my camera, what about you?

What is it about freighters? Nice Madge.
Love the calm.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Madge!
Beautiful and very calming scene!
Peace. I could sit and look at it for hours. What a magical moment.
(I don’t see the linky…I know I’m in EST…but I think the time is correct.)
Awesome low light capture and composition at Samish Bay, Madge! And a wonderful commentary of the moment, too!
What a beautiful ship! I love Puget Sound. I’ve gone whale watching to the San Juan’s many times.
A beautiful, serene image. Love the blues and greys.
Beautiful, muted colours, Madge!
love the soft, subtle hues. :)
Breathtaking!
Beautiful photo and cute story! What an unexpected, fun game of fetch :)
What a beautiful scene!
My favorite was seeing the barge/freighter in the background ever so slightly. Thanks for the party Marge.
Laurie
No dogs playing fetch here but I have certainly met or come across some interesting/fun/unusual people when I’ve been out with my camera. You certainly had a wonderful moment and the photo to recall it is as wonderful!
Wow, that’s gorgeous, Madge! Lovely, serene colors, so painterly! :)
This scene reminds me of coffee. Like you took a regular photo and soaked it in coffee.
I love the random things that happen too. And I love big yellow dogs!
Looks like a quite spot.
The soft light is beautiful and I love the distant mountains and the barge! Gorgeous scene, Madge!
Great shot of the bay. So serene and muted. I, of course loved the story of the big dog with the tennis ball. Which leads me to this question. Do you carry mace or pepper spray just in case? Personally I do not get out of my vehicle unless it is a place that I feel is totally safe. I even pack a gun- that is how paranoid I am. There are too many horror stories in the media of violent things happening to women. Please be careful. One never knows.
Thank you for hosting another wonderful party, Madge. This has become a wonderful, weekly escape to beautiful things!
Beautiful photo… looks like low tide.
Hauntingly beautiful photograph.
I like the story of the surprise apple too:)
Great shot, as usual, Madge. I am sorry I haven’t been joining the last few weeks. I haven’t taken many photos at all and don’t really have a “top shot” to share. Thanks for visiting and commenting!
what a lovely relaxing view …
I’m linking up for the first time via Ordinary Miracles and The Crazy Nine. I have a soft spot in my heart for Maritime views, particularly those involving container ships. I remember one of my first flights into a port city in South East Asia at dusk, the sea was a glitter with hundreds of container ships, and really, there’s such beauty in the juxtaposition of the natural, powerful beauty of the sea and fragile human constructions of iron and steel.
All of which is to say, this is a lovely image. Hard + soft. Ambiance, and gorgeous colour. Nice one.
You really never know what will happen while out for a stroll with the camera. :)
Awesome, great scenery, some exquisite colors.
Madge, that is an amazing photo, I love the light and colours there
Peacefully beautiful shot, Madge. I’m glad to hear the dog was friendly – a very cute story!
What a gorgeous shot this is Madge! lucky you to live in this wonderfully beautiful area. So enjoy your photography, and yes, these spontaneous moments are so wonderful in photography!
Lovely scene. Great photo.
