Hunting, is an occasional pastime for some and a passion for others. In all my travels around the northwest, I’ve seen ‘No Trespassing,’ or ‘No Hunting,’ signs on property everywhere. Here along a very rural, dirt road in Whitman County in the Palouse, in southeastern Washington state, this sign inviting hunters was a first for me.
My dad was an avid, but occasional hunter, especially for deer, and when he’d bag one we enjoyed the venison for months. I recall the first time I was going deer hunting with him. He handed me a copy of the Washington state hunting laws. On the cover was a lovely image of the Cascade Mountains, in the foreground was a buck and a doe. Dad drew an arrow pointing at the buck, with the admonition ‘this is a buck, shoot this one.’ He was such a tease…

this time of year, i am glad i live in a city …
That’s funny about your Dad!
now that is a new one for me … makes me laugh. it is usually you can’t hunt, walk, run or whatever it maybe … fun find!! (:
You are right ~ never saw one of those signs ~ great post ~ (A Creative Harbor)
I’ve never seen a sign like that before- but plenty of the “No trespassing” signs.
i’ve gotta admit, i’ve never seen a ‘feel free to hunt’ sign before.
I love this sign, it’s a new one for me too, and I love the story about your dad! :)
Madge, around here people hunt to put meat on the table. We’re being overtaken by deer so hunters provide a much needed service.
Cool post! Love venison! My 5-yr-old grandson loves a hunting game on Wii. He is constantly telling ‘Grandma, don’t forget, don’t shoot the ladies!’ Your dad’s comment brought that to mind…too funny!
We’re closer to a hunting area than I care for (across the street; our house has gotten peppered with buckshot). I love wild game but also love wild living things.
Your dad sounds like a lot of fun.
I’ve never seen a sign like that before anywhere.
Lots of no hunting and no trespassing signs around here, but have never seen a Feel Free to Hunt.
What a neat memory of your dad — he sounds like he had a great sense of humor. :)
This sign kind of makes me sad. :(
I don’t mind so much when people hunt for food, but I hate when people hunt for money or sport.
That’s good that your dad was teaching you the right way to hunt though – sweet memory!
Wishing you a beautiful September Madge!

That’s a first, Madge! Too bad hunters don’t pay attention to signs, though. Every year I have to ‘dodge the bullet’ as they hunt wherever they please. Wish they all were like your sweet Dad. xx
What a nice person to allow hunting. I’m afraid I enjoy my deer too much to let people hunt on my property.
