Men dreamed big dreams, took risks and man walked on the surface of the moon. I sat here and cried as I heard that Neil Armstrong died today at the age of 82. I remember well, getting up at 3am and watching the launch of all the Gemini and Apollo capsules on the Saturn rockets. I recall the excitement watching the lunar landing and his first step to the lunar surface. Neil Armstrong was the commander of Apollo 11 which landed on the surface of the moon, July 20, 1969 and six hours later, he became the first man to ever set foot there and leave his mark on history for all time.
His family released a statement today through NASA and they closed it with these words:
“For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink,”
This post is out of the ordinary for me, but I simply felt compelled to honor a man I admired as an American hero. Rest in peace, Neil, you took ‘one small step for man, and one giant leap for mankind.’
A man to be admired.
I just heard that he had passed on the evening news. He was truly an American hero and a hero to many others around the world.
Fitting post, Madge. We don’t have a lot of truly consummate heroes and he was one of the precious few.
Neil Armstrong was a huge hero for me. He was a quiet national hero who never sought the limelight after his historic mission. I hope the nation honors his accomplishments.
Oh Madge, I hadn’t heard; thank you for posting. He was a giant among men…did you know he took communion while on that walk on the moon?
My condolences to his family and friends.
Yes, I did…
Someone to look up to and a real true American hero! Richard
Nice post.
What a wonderful post and tribute to a true American hero!! Thank you.
Good tribute. Greetings.
Hey. I was born in 1961. Imagine me a young boy when this happened. I had some rustic neighbors who thought the moon landing was faked. I also had a great grandma who I talked to on the phone that day. She said, “This is more exciting than when Orville and Wilbur Wright fist flew their plane!”
I think the present generation lacks this kind of hero. Nowadays we are like a rowboat bobbing on the water. We don’t have depth or course or headway. I think we just make “small steps for man” now…
