Places to go, people to see..via a ferry ride across Puget Sound. The Washington Department of Transportation operates the ferry system that plies the waters up and down the length of Puget Sound from the San Juan Islands to Olympia. With a fleet of twenty double ended vessels, ours is the largest ferry fleet in the nation and the third largest in the world. The largest of our ferries can accommodate 202 vehicles and 2,500 passengers. The shortest route crosses between Point Defiance in Tacoma to Tahlequah on Vashon Island taking just fifteen minutes. The longest route, crosses between Anacortes and Sidney, B.C., taking about 3 hours.
Here the M/V Tillikum loads vehicles and passengers bound for Fauntleroy in West Seattle. The crossing between Vashon Island and West Seattle takes about 20 minutes. The 310 foot Tillikum can at full capacity accommodate 87 vehicles and 1,200 passengers. I love traveling around the Sound by ferry, but it is a bit expensive. The standard one-way fare for a car and driver is $16.75, but I do splurge once in a while, to feel the brisk wind in your face and sunshine on your back as you watch the gorgeous views of Puget Sound slip by.
Thanks for joining me today, for the view that is right here! ~ Madge

Impossible to live on the coast and not take ferry pictures! Good one Madge.
Nice shot! I first took ferries on San Francisco Bay as a child. There were more of them then. I love taking them around the Sound, though you’re right about the cost.
romantic evening sky.
looks so cold! i’ve been to olympia, we toured the brewery….i was with my parents as a kid….we had friends in seattle and spent some time up there visiting…i don’t know if i’ve ever told you that before so i’m telling you now!
I am not a ‘cruise’ person, Madge, but a ferry ride across Puget Sound would be right up my alleyway. Don’t have a car, though.
Love this photo. It’s certainly not a scene we see around these parts. I am hoping for a trip to the Gulf in the next few weeks so maybe I’ll see some big boats!
It would be worth the money for a nice change of pace on the journey.
I love using ferries as a means of transportation. Going from Gills Rock to Washington Island on the tip of the Wisconsin peninsula is one of the pleasure of vacationing at Door County. This brings back many fond memories of summer vacations with our grandkids.
Impressive, it must be so lovely to live on, and leave from, such a dramatic coast line.
I am looking forward to visiting Seattle … and taking that ferry to the San Juan Islands is high on the itinerary .. now I have to find time to actually do this .. I love your photography!
Beautifully captured image of taking the ferry in the evening, Madge. Love the ferry travels too!
Would make for an interesting commute.
A very nice photo.
I came over to link with your Sat. party but….can’t find it ?
Thanks for coming by BJ… I’ve sent you an email with the link to Weekly Top Shot #31.
Great shot Madge. I haven’t been on a ferry since the summer of 84…we went from Vancouver to Vancouver Island. It was a beautiful trip. OH…that’s not true I was on a ferry from Dover to Calais France in 99! That was a nice trip but not as scenic as the BC ferry ride. You’ve brought back some very pleasant memories Madge…thanks!
Hi Madge, sorry to hear that you’ve been so ill, I know whooping cough would have been exhausting to contend with. Glad to see you’re up and running again, even if it is only on half speed! Lovely nautical image you’ve captured here for us. Take it easy until you’re 100%.
