Sunshine, rich soil, water, seed and time. Winter wheat grown in the Palouse rises quickly out of the soil warmed by the early spring sunshine. Reaching for the warmth and light, the blades of wheat create a undulating sea of emerald green, sometimes as far as the eye can see. The Palouse is a 4,000 square mile region of rolling, asymmetrical hills, created by the wind over the millennia without valleys and ridges. While farmers grow several varieties of wheat here, the region is a world leader in the production of soft white winter wheat, which thrives in the mostly mild Palouse winters, wet springs and dry summers. You may know soft white winter wheat as pastry flour from which you bake delectable goodies for family and friends, but it is also a major export to Asian countries for noodle production.
For me personally, it is a region where I have now spent three week long spring breaks traveling the backroads, photographing the area. It is incredibly quiet and beautiful and gives this harried city girl (raised a country girl and still one at heart) a respite in heart, mind and soul from the crowded streets, traffic and noise. I’m home now and of course, work beckons on Monday, transporting students back and forth to school until the year ends on June 14.
Thanks for joining me today, for the view that is right here! ~ Madge
