Chinese New Year's - Year 4710

Happy Chinese New Year! Year 4710 or 2012 on our calendar, is the Year of the Dragon. Before the snow storm began over a week ago, I inadvertently ended up at Uwajimaya’s Grocery store in Renton WA. I don’t normally make a habit of uploading images I take with my cell phone, but these paper dragons were so bright and appealing I couldn’t resist!

My husband and I will be venturing down to Chinatown in Seattle next Saturday for the day long community celebration which begins with a Lion and Dragon Dance at 11am and other activities to follow until late in the day. We have a walking itinerary to 20 participating restaurants with $2 menus.

The Dragon, western culture dragons are slain and generally evil. But in eastern culture the dragon is a symbol of good fortune and power and the traditional Dragon Dance used to open the celebration is thought to evict evil spirits. The celebration is fifteen days long, each day emphasizing a different aspect and tradition.

So I’ll say ‘Kung Hii Fatt Cho’ – ‘Congratulations and Be Prosperous!’

Love the dragons – a great shot, no matter what lens caught it. It looks like a wonderful place to explore. And $2 menus! What a treat! I’ve not been to Seattle’s Chinatown. I hope you’ll find some shots you’d like to post.

  2. So excited to see your celebration of Chinese New Year. I did the same on my blog and will add to it this week. Today in the mail a package of traditional paper goods sold for CNY arrived from our children in Singapore….so fun.

I Love your opening page..and it is amazing with the dragons right in the middle. Do you use blogger and upload your own photo? I haven’t tried that, yours is the most effective I have seen.

Thank you for dropping by my blog…and reading about little hands… We used to live in the west and went to Seattle many times. Love the western side of the states, but we now live totally east….great country. smiles: sharon

  3. Wow, you must have a very good cell phone camera. Mine said to be good, but I have not had much luck taking photos with it. I am looking forward to seeing this photos you take of the celebration this weekend. I hope you get good weather.

  4. I’ve long been an admirer of Chinese dragons — you are so fortunate to have a personal one-on-one and to take a photo to boot — jealous!

A “Congratulations and Be Prosperous” to you too, my friend!
