Break /brāk/ (verb): a pause in work or during an activity or event.
: : :
Here,
an employee
of a produce stand in the Main Arcade at Seattle’s famous Pike Place Market
takes a ‘coffee’ break from work.
Except it was only 08:19.
: : :
Smoking marijuana was legalized in the state of Washington last year,
so while this fellow was not breaking the law on one hand,
it is still illegal to smoke pot in public.
: : :
Also,
I wonder if his boss knows he is taking ‘this’ kind of break from his duties.
I watched him for perhaps a half hour
while I sat in my vehicle reviewing images I’d captured,
and he repeatedly came outside the open doorway
(his job was just inside this door to the left as I saw him there ‘working’),
sat on a narrow ledge,
and indulged his habit of choice.
: : :
Regardless of what I think about the passage of this law
(I have positive and negative thoughts on the issue),
I don’t think I’ll ever get used
to seeing people
light up
in a
public
place.

Seems strange to see someone smoking a pipe mow a days. Great shot!
interesting to see something like this now! i wonder, with the laws changing, if employers will still drug test for pot? great shot!
Any job that is safety sensitive (like truck drivers, bus drivers, industrial jobs, medical jobs etc) will always have to drug test… let’s always hope so!
absolutely!
I’m with you on this one! Madge, with your photos and blog I get to see things I ordinarily wouldn’t see. Thanks! Hugs and Happy New Year!!!
What a wild capture!
I agree with your feeling about lighting up in public. I think it will bring more surprise drug testing in the work place.
Excellent shot that really shows the uniqueness of the state you live in, compared to the rest of the country right now. Have a great weekend!
Oh yes! I believe the law is unenforceable, don’t you? “No smoking in public” and “no transportation over state lines.” Ha! (And I’d say this particular guy has a problem, wouldn’t you?)
So far I haven’t see a lot of enforcement. Last spring I called in on the 2-way radio from my school bus while driving down International Boulevard (Highway 99) which runs past SeaTac Airport, following a car full of Tyee Highschool students who were passing around a joint, ALL were partaking, including the driver. But dispatch didn’t call it into the police because it was just legalized… DUI is never legal! But I couldn’t argue the point over the 2-way… sadly I just followed them for several miles and watch them smoke away… This guy shouldn’t have a job, in my opinion.
Happy New Year!
I sure if I like my kids to see this sort of thing in public..Great catch!
The world is a’changin, and most of it is not for the better.
Well you never know, he could be living with chronic pain…
Very interesting.. I can’t see how a person could keep a job like this!
What people do on their personal time in their personal home is not my business, as long as they aren’t harming anyone else.. but a job is a job, and I can’t imagine seeing this in public.
I am amused that you were able to sit & observe & photograph him though.. I felt like you could have been on a stake out or a private investigator. :)
What a wonderfully candid shot!
If I were his employer he’d be fired regardless of the job. It may be legal but I don’t think on the job, any job, is an appropriate time to partake. Like one of your other readers I too think this guy has a problem. I don’t know if I would have but I would have wanted to tell his boss.
caught on a sneaky break!
Busted! :)
Hi Madge, that is a really capturing a moment . . . I have never seen anyone smoking pot, I would have thought that it is an old-fashioned pipe.
What an interesting capture.
Well, whether it is legal or not, I would not want him to be my employee especially if he needs many breaks to partake in this addition. Also, I would not want to be his co-worker particularly if we worked together and I needed his help on anything; too many things could skew his judgement from his break smoking. Don’t know what is happening to this world or our young people!
I guess his days are stress free.
I’m saddened by things like this.
Could it just be tobacco, or could you tell by the smell? I wonder what job he does as well! :D
No it was pot, he has a small pot pipe in his hands… the image is a bit blurry unfortunately it was still the best one I caught..
Great photo, and I guess he can blame his youth. With age comes wisdom (hopefully!)
I will never understand what good could come from this law. Guess I am getting old. I can’t imagine being able to function satisfactorily in a job after smoking drugs. I am sure the boss has no idea. As the other comment mentioned…with age comes wisdom. Let’s hope that these youngsters will be able to receive the bar from us when the time comes…..
Hmmmmm…I’m not sure how I feel about it too. But wow…what a great shot!
Not something I would want my employee to be doing on the job, for sure! I’d be worried with money changing hands whether he could count straight! Great capture, Madge. Wishing you a good New Year. xo Karen
Thanks Madge, for continuing this great meme….I think it’s going to get a lot worse, before it gets better but I can always hope for the best :)
Great catch! I feel the same as you on this issue.
And the legality battle continues…:)JP
The problem with having your blog delivered right to my email is that I don’t pop over here near enough. So here I am catching up with comments. I loved this, what a great capture.
