Dawn, the first light breaking the night sky.
: : :
Technically,
this is twilight,
the time between dawn
(the first light in the morning sky)
and sunrise
(when the orb of the sun actually breaks the horizon).
: : :
And,
there are three stages of twilight,
Civil, Nautical and Astronomical,
these all have to do with the number of degrees the orb of the sun is below the horizon.
: : :
I used to think the terms
dawn and sunrise were synonymous,
they’re not.
For my purposes,
I still call the early light in the sky dawn
if the sun hasn’t actually broken above the horizon in the eastern sky.
: : :
Here,
driving into Colfax early last Monday morning at 04:39,
the sky was absolutely drop dead gorgeous.
I spotted this vintage windmill for pumping water and
stopped to capture the beauty of the moment.
: : :
My sole purpose in spending a couple days in the Palouse
was to capture the wheat harvest.
Alas,
most of the region was already harvested prior to my arrival.
I did mange to find some farmers still harvesting
and was pleased to capture their hard work.
I was told that the harvest was early this year,
it has something to do with the moisture content in the wheat berries
that determines the proper time
to crank up the combines
and go to work.
