Calendars, help us mark time and keep on schedule. I’ve always enjoyed calendars.

When I was a kid growing up in a fairly rural area,
the businesses that were clustered in the very small towns that dotted the landscape varied
from Penney’s, grocers, hardware to farm supplies.
Every business in town gave away calendars to their customers.
I loved the ones best that came from Cavanaugh’s Hardware Store,
where you could buy everything you needed and then some.

In later years working on the Seattle waterfront,
the calendars I coveted the most came from the railroads, BNR, UPR and MRR.
Milwaukee Road was especially nice, and as I was an freight agent or shipping supervisor for the Port of Seattle or Seattle Stevedore,
it was relatively easy to come by.

Now days, not so much.
Calendars, free ones, are as scarce as hens teeth, at least around where I live.
Thankfully, when I go see my sister around Christmastime, the local ACE Hardware in Napavine WA always hands them out.

My husband likes to keep his appointments on it, hung on the fridge.
While I still love calendars, I keep all my appointments in my smartphone these days.

Yesterday, I finished putting together six desktop virtual calendars for you.
If you’d like one, they are 865×1000 and will fit nicely in the center of your desktop,
just follow the link to my Dropbox account on my ‘FREEBIES’ page to download one or all.
Free, now that’s a good thing!
It’s ‘Random 5 Friday‘ over and my good friend Nancy’s place ‘A Rural Journal,’
so I’m sharing these odd bits about myself today:
(1) I don’t like white sneakers, they are too hard to keep nice and clean looking.
(2) I love Greek food.
(3) I collect, use and repair/restore vintage fountain pens. (Hey, send me your old ones knocking around in that desk!)
(4) I keep a very organized desk, with vintage appointments. For instance, a brown leather letter holder, ink wells and a cast iron tape dispenser.
‘(5) I don’t like having dirty hands, everything at work is greasy or germy, so I’m constantly washing, washing, washing!
There is it five random,
odd bits about me today…
things you just had to know,
right??
Right.

I make a calendar every year. My mother enjoys them, and she always wants to see animals and a few local rural settings,
Those are all wonderful images but my favorite is the field of flowers. Interesting 5 things I now know about Madge…thanks for sharing!
Yes, brown sneakers are the way to go.
It’s an explosion of color and fabulous texture, Madge!
These are great calendars. I do a calendar for my farm each year, but I don’t give them away either. :-)
with few exceptions I always gravitate towards white sneakers – even if they are hard to keep clean!! great calendar photos… thanks for sharing (but I too keep my calendar on the smart phone).
so so so pretty & so so so colorful! =)
Very pretty calendars, thanks for creating these! I love Greek food, one of my daughters makes the best dolmadas I’ve ever had (although I think it may be the only thing she knows how to make). I hate the thought of dirty hands. Whenever I ride the subway, my hands feel gross – even if I don’t touch anything – go figure.
The color is so vivid. I love the Tulips.
Love the bright colors!
Great idea to make a calendar!:)
Beautiful calendar Madge! Really says “April” to me. :)
Thank you for sharing at R5F this week dear. xo
The photos are magnificent! And thanks for sharing them! SPRING IS FINALLY IN THE AIR!!!
For some reason, I save calendars. Not many are very “nice” ones, just the freebies your speak of. I think they are similar to a journal, there is always all kinds of stuff written on them. Your calendar images are beautiful!
fabulous. one year i made all my friends calendars as christmas/hanukkah gifts with photos from adventures we had together its such a great present
