A cup of coffee, a seat and a cigarette…. Smoking has certainly changed as an activity in our society over the last twenty years. I quit smoking 26 years ago, at that time smoking in the office was beginning to change and complaints were lodged by non-smokers lobbying against those of us who smoked at our desks. But it was still a few years before smoking employees were given designated smoking areas outside. Here on Harbor Island at the Crowley Maritime facilities, I spotted this folding chair leaning up against the building next to ‘The Butt Can.’ I confess, I’m glad I quit, I don’t miss it. I’m thankful I’m not counted among those I see huddled against the elements outside the office, the warehouse, the restaurant to enjoy their brand of choice. Coffee break for smokers has changed hasn’t it?!
Hopefully even this last vestige of smokers activity will disappear soon too. Makes for a nice shot though. (32 years smoke-free last week for me!)
I’m sure that would be a hardship for some, but for me I would mind at all…
good for you, madge! i’m glad i never started. i couldn’t handle the expense, much less the health risks and hassles!
Good for you TexWisGirl! Neither did my sister…
It will be 7 years for me in April. Glad I quit, but I admit, I miss the breaks from my desk and hearing the scuttlebutt.
It’s been a long time since I had that ‘miss smoking feeling,’ perhaps because it’s been so many years…
I’m the only one in my family who never smoked and was surrounded by smokers. I still remember the smell lingering everywhere, on everything. My mother smoked like a chimney into her 70s then faced repeated bouts of pneumonia. I remember seeing her chest xrays many times as we sat in emergency rooms together. The damage was ghastly. I wish smokers could see what it does.
The BIG moments in life that got me to stop were dual: Watching my beloved mom die of lung cancer (she also worked in the ship yards during WWII, asbestos is deadly) and my children were born…
Good for you! Several members of my family were smokers. It did a real number of them and, sorry to say, they paid the price. Great post!
Trying to hook up with the link you left but so far unsuccessful. I will keep at it! All the best!
Thanks, Helene… I’ve never looked back… it’s a costly habit. I sent you an email to try to see if I can help you figure out the Linky Tool for the meme… check your mail… ;-)
I love the colors in this shot!
Thanks Randy, that yellow caught my eye too!
I remember going into the toilets at high school and trying a ciggie, took a few puffs, didn’t see the point and never tried again thank goodness!! It must be really hard if you get hooked! Well done for quitting Madge, it takes a huge amount of willpower I bet! Like you’re shot, wasn’t quite sure from the title what was coming until I scrolled down haha!
Good for you Grace… I smoke for 10 years… 10 too many!
Great pop of yellow against the charcoal grey.
Thanks Zosia… it doesn’t pop out doesn’t it!
i think that’s a pretty cool Butt Can! i’m surprised they don’t have it chained down! ha!
Actually Laura, I thought that too… things in an urban area tend to ‘walk’ away when they’re not!
