All along the Tieton River,

east of summit of White Pass on Highway 12,

these clumps of Arrowleaf Balsamroot are abundant,

along the highway, and on the hillsides.

They are like bright spots of sunshine on the ground!

Part of the sunflower family of plants, they are found where it is dry and cold.

The roots are used as food and medicine.

I don’t know about eating the roots, but they are indeed medicine to me,

a ‘balm’ for my soul!

Tonight,

I have arrived in Colfax WA,

to photograph the wheat and canola fields

in this premier farming region of Washington and Idaho.

It has been 5 years since I last came to the Palouse.

It was a habit of mine to come a couple of times a year for a week each trip,

driving the blue highways and dirt roads,

soaking up the solitude and beauty

of this place that

I love.
