Maintenance – Weekly Top Shot #66

Amtrak Maintenance Shop - Seattle WA

Full of activity, the maintenance shop for Amtrak is lit up and engines are running.

Here in the SODO (south of downtown) neighborhood of Seattle,

South Holgate Street slices the Amtrak railroad yard in half.

Passing by early this morning,

I heard the engines rumble

and saw the shop lights and was intrigued.

I don’t know about you,

but I am always drawn to industrial activities.

:     :     :

Perhaps, it is because I worked on Harbor Island for 20 years,

for both the Port of Seattle and

Seattle Stevedore (now Stevedoring Services of America).

Daily, I was exposed to the noise,

activities, smells and people,

who were involved in international, national

and local import and export of goods,

via ocean going ships, rail and truck.

All kinds of goods,

both as break-bulk cargo and in containers.

I never tired of looking up and seeing 500 to 1,000 foot ships glide silently into berth.

:      :      :

I came to love the blue-collar,

hard working areas of Seattle.
