Grazing in the Grass – Weekly Top Shot #48

Seattle Space Needle and Stained Glass Grass

The Seattle Space Needle stands rigidly behind painted steel grass blades which sway in the wind. “The Grass Blades,” were built as a public art project in 2002 for a cost to the City of a half million dollars and won a ‘Merit’ award from the American Institute of Architects. Each of the 110, thirty foot tall and about 8 inch wide painted steel blades look like stained-glass and form a visual barrier between the EMP (Experience Music Project) and a parking lot to the north at the Seattle Center.

My post is just a bit late today, I’ve been out buying cement paint and then painted the front porch. What are you up to today?

  1. I had no idea these “blades of grass” were located at the Needle! You’ve captured the whole scene so beautifully, Madge! I’ve been transplanting peonies that I dug in my mother’s garden….also scattered some pink and red poppy seeds, which I really hope sprout next spring! Later, I’m going to paint a little side table for my new “white room,” which is a little too bright! ;-) It should be a good location for still life photography in the winter, though!

  2. I like the color contrast between the orange and red “grass” and the yellow glow of the Space Needle.

Happy painting. Nothing to exciting for me this weekend. Did a little baking, laundry and cleaning today.
