County and regional fairs, what better down home fun could there be? Here as the light of early evening deepens and the lights begin to stand out, riders on the Wave Swinger swirl around and around. Each year the fair runs for 17 days, this year the fair opens September 7 and ends on the 23rd. Many call it the Puyallup Fair, but officially it is the Western Washington State Fair and yes, the fairgrounds are in the town of Puyallup (pronounced Pew-all-up). Each year the fair foundation creates a jingle to advertise with, this year it is ‘Get Your Happy On!’ Beginning in 1900, this will be the 112th year of the fair, it is the largest single event held in the state and ranks in the top 10 fairs worldwide.
Like all county and regional fairs, exhibits include 4-H (love that), quilting (love that), canning (love that), sewing (love that), photography (love that), paintings (love that, oh I guess I just love them all), woodworking, flowers, Grange displays, commercial exhibits, and so much more. Personally, I’ve been a 4-H exhibitor and as an adult had paintings in the King County Fair and won Blue Ribbons. My family and I have been ‘doing the Puyallup’ since the early 1950s I still enjoy going as much today as when I was a kid, except like most things, it’s a lot more expensive. The opening night of the fair is the pro-rodeo and Willie Nelson will be the entertainment. I’d love to see both, Willie and the rodeo. I receive free gate admission as a school district employee, but my husband will be out of town this year so I’m not sure if I’ll go by myself or not, we’ll see.
“You can do it at a trot, You can do it at a gallop, You can do it real slow so your heart won’t palpitate. Just don’t be late. Do the Puyallup.”
