Everything I Own - Homeless Man in Downtown Seattle

Homeless in Seattle. Very early on a Saturday morning at 05:41, a homeless man strains to push a shopping cart loaded with so many belongings that you can only see the back wheels of the cart. He either collects things, or this cart is the repository for everything he owns, I’m guessing the latter. I don’t often photograph homeless people, but his pink beanie and unusual mode of transporting his stuff caught my eye and somehow was captivating.

Thanks for joining me today, for the view that is right here! ~ Madge

  1. I wonder if he is re-locating or just out and about in the city. I would suppose that some homeless people find it necessary to re-locate from time to time to stay away from those who would do them harm.

  2. Great capture (with an empty floor of the building with “lease” sign, brilliant). Somehow your photo is not dragging me down to the depressing state… despite of the difficult subject. Maybe because it’s suggesting that people are more resilient than we think… No matter how hard it is, life goes on. God bless him, hope his days get better. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work.

  3. As sad as this is, it is a great capture. Sometimes you just have to show the not so pretty side of things. It’s still a reality in lots of big cities, and I do occasionally see homeless people in NYC as well. And even if not on the street with their belongings, so many have unfortunately lost their homes due to the economy. Let’s pray it gets better!

This reminds me of the many famous black and white photos during the (earlier) Depression by the WPA. This could stand well as a similar contemporary commentary. Sadly, nicely done.

  5. it is a great photo and once my son said to me when he was 22 and got thrown out of his apartment, mom i am so lucky, everything I own fits in the back of my pickup truck. he was moving into someone Florida Room. i think this homeless person is a woman.
