Midnight Lights – Weekly Top Shot #16

Flashes light the night at CenturyLink Field… Created by Jimmy Diebold, this short two minute video is not only entertaining but full of ‘wow’ factor! I had the distinct privilege and pure enjoyment of working with Jimmy early last September for an evening, as one of six local photographers who were staged in, around, and near CenturyLink Field to capture images that he then used to create this visual work of art.

Jimmy describes his video creation as a “frame by frame animation of pictures.” The final video was set to music, a remix by PatrickReza of a currently popular song by M83 called, ‘Midnight City.’ Through weeks of meticulous editing, the resulting film establishes the inanimate stadium as a character come to life. “Cutting strobe lights to a beat has been done a lot,” explains Diebold. “So, I wanted these lights to not just sync to the beat, but actually feel more like the chorus to the song. As if the stadium were having a call and response with itself through light.”

My daughter Amanda and another photographer (I believe it was Jason Tanaka) were staged in the north parking lot about one hundred yards from the stadium, I was near Pike Place Market shooting south along the Alaskan Way Viaduct towards the stadium. Clint Goldman, the Executive Producer, found his way to my vantage point and visited with me and my son (he watched my back while I was shooting) for a few minutes to see what I was capturing. At around eleven o’clock all of the photographers went inside the stadium for the interior shots, except me. They all worked until dawn. Unfortunately, I had to get home to sleep to get up for work the next day. Regardless of having to cut short my night on the project, it was a blast. Jimmy was a delight to work with and a very creative, gracious and talented man.

In three days since Jimmy posted it on YouTube, the video has been viewed almost 100,000 times. Please watch it, you will be impressed!
