Mount Rainer Over Lake Tapps – Weekly Top Shot #170

Mount Rainier and Lake Tapps - Pierce County WA

Mount Rainier : is the highest mountain (14,409′ elevation) in both the State of Washington and the Cascade Range of the Pacific Northwest.

:  :  :

Here yesterday,

I took my new Fuji XT-1 out for an afternoon of shooting southeast of Auburn

between Lake Tapps, Buckley and Enumclaw,

on what is called the Enumclaw Plateau

formed by former mud flows from

when the volcano erupted.

:  :  :

I had heard on the local news

that the Cascade Water Alliance had drawn down

the lake level 40 feet below normal to make some repairs to the 100 year old dam

that was built to create this man-made lake (reservoir).

Wanting to see for myself, I stopped and caught some images,

this shows the dramatic lack of water and how high and dry are the docks and boats

of homeowners who normally enjoy the pleasures of lakefront activities.

Mount Rainier was ‘out’ in all her glory yesterday, very clear and crisp.

I say ‘out’ because often the mountain is socked in,

obscured from view by cloud cover,

that’s a common phrase spoken by locals,

‘Hey, the mountain’s out today,

did you see it?’

Joining with Nancy for ‘Random 5 Friday,’ and Tanya for ‘Willy-Nilly Friday 5.’

1)  I am VERY pleased so far with my new camera (Fuji XT-1) the colors are superb and the images are sharp.

2)  Today, is officially the first day of Spring, but we’ve had spring weather for weeks.

3)  We had corned beef, cabbage and homemade soda bread for St. Patrick’s Day, did you?

4)  My sister is coming for a visit tomorrow, I haven’t seen her in almost a year, can’t wait!

5)  A couple days ago, I repaired several toys for our Lucy (Corgi-Mix), she was over joyed, she does a very good job of doing what we call ‘fluffectomies’ on her toys, necessitating numerous ‘sew-ups.’

  1. I was just sharing about your weather with my daughter-in-law. She was skeptic at first since she once lived in Seattle! How wonderful for you that your sister is coming to visit you. I’m saving the rest of my comments for my post! Happy spring to you. And thank you for hosting this meme.

  2. Looks like you are celebrating spring in all the right ways! A new camera! Fabulous…and fabulous is the word I would desrcibe that great shot of Mt. Rainier! Very nice! Oh, Irish soda bread…now I want some! :-) Enjoy your visit with your sister!

  3. That is a dramatic image, and I’m not referring just to Mt. Rainier! I realize that’s an intentional “draw-down” but there are many lakes in southern Oregon and in California that are starting to look like that because of the drought–and the change in climate! Scary. You know, I’m pretty certain I saw Rainier when I was in the Seattle area years ago, but I would really love to see it again.

  4. Enjoy the day with your sister, Madge!
I’m happy t hear you are pleased with your new camera :)
And Mt. Rainier is absolutely awesome … It must be so special to have it in the horizon!

  5. What a wonderful picture of Mt. Rainier. Interesting view with the low water level. I don’t imagine the residents are too pleased, but it could be worse if the something happened with the dam. I’d say your camera is doing pretty well! Too bad spring didn’t come early on the east coast. :( I’m waiting…No, not a traditional St. Patrick’s Day meal here. Enjoy your time with your sister–but I probably don’t need to tell you that. My friend’s dog performs the same surgery on her toys.
