Har·vest : härvəst : [noun] : the process or period of gathering in crops.

Here,
in the small southwestern Washington community of Grayland,
a farmer walks behind a dry harvester gathering ripe cranberries for processing and eventual sale.
Most of the farmers in this area sell their cranberry crop to Ocean Spray.
A few are independents who sell their crop
to the public or elsewhere.
: : :
We stopped and spoke with one small farmer who was harvesting
his one acre cranberry bog with one of these dry harvesters.
He shared this year his yield from his one acre was about 20,000 pounds of berries.
Ocean Spray pays him 45¢ a pound, or about $9000 for his 2014 harvest.
Not bad, but then he said some years he harvests only 10 to 12,000 pounds,
so of course he would make a lot less.
: : :
These dry harvesters comb the low lying evergreen cranberry plants, gathering them into sacks,
which are then transported to their warehouses (which on these farms looks like a second garage)
for cleaning and washing prior to Ocean Spray picking them up.
: : :
Harvest season,
here in southwestern Washington,
is during the first several weeks of October,
and Grayland has a Cranberry Festival during that same time.

Very interesting, Madge. I didn’t know that dry harvesting was done. I just know about the “bog”, which sounds wet.
Never seen it done ‘dry’. Around here it’s all wet bog work.
I had no idea how they were harvested.
