This image
is perhaps the best accidental photo I’ve ever taken.
: : :
Several years ago
while out photographing the Palouse region
of southeastern Washington state,
I was returning to my motel in Colfax.
As I crossed the Snake River heading north
just prior to sundown,
off to my left,
movement and white tails waving like flags
caught my attention;
I ditched to the side of the highway.
Quickly grabbing my camera from the passenger seat,
I began shooting images of the running deer,
it was only after three or four shots
that I realized there were two coyotes in hot pursuit.
: : :
They all ran through that little wash
and then disappeared from my view off to the left.
: : :
It was a fortuitous moment
with a camera in hand.
I can tell you,
that over the years I have had many opportunities
that would have made
great fortuitous images,
but couldn’t either stop my vehicle,
or didn’t have a camera
in hand.
: : :
Has that happened to you?

Oh, that is a cool sight!
i’m glad you had your camera!
I’m glad you had your camera handy. After a few missed shots, I decided to always have a camera with me. I have large, heavy SLRs that can’t be carried very easily, so I have a small point-and-shoot that fits in my coat pocket easily. I still miss good shots! :-)
What a lucky capture!
Great shot. :)
Yes, on more occasions than I’d like. Most times I just can’t pull over which aggravates me most! Great shot!!
That is just an amazing photograph!
What a great capture Madge! Looks a little like my area as we have TONS of coyotes too.
Ah ~ yes, most definitely has happened or batteries die at the most inopportune time ~ Wonderful photo ~ do hope the deer got away ~ carol, xxx
That’s an amazing accidental photo. Hope the deer won the race.

Truly NatGeo style. In fact better in some terms!
Great capture! From their screams at night, I think we literally have packs of them here.
Talk about ACTION !!!! This is goose-bumping and to be there in person!!!!…:)JP
Madge,
What a picture! Most people don’t get to see something like that, let alone photograph it. Good for you.
Awesome! This is so cool. First I just love the way those long white tails are standing so tall. How fantastic to realize they were being chase by the coyotes, I do hope they got away.
What a great capture Madge!
Wow! That is a remarkable shot!
What a great capture! Look at those white tails!
