Bowing Crow – Weekly Top Shot #91

Bowing Crow on a Cyclone Fence - SODO District of Seattle WA

Crows, part of the Corvid species of birds, so smart and entertaining to watch.

:  :  :

Washington has four species belonging to the Corvid family,

Crows, Ravens, Magpies and Stellar Jays.

:  :  :

I have watched them for years,

I have followed crows at dusk to try to find their rookery in our area (no luck so far).

I have tried to catch Magpies with my camera in eastern WA,

following them down dirt roads,

while they flit from fence post to fence post,

just fast enough to keep me

from getting a good shot.

Here,

early in the morning about 05:30,

I have found a crow hanging out on a cyclone fence

near the Allied Waste Services dump in the SODO District (south of downtown Seattle).

Watching him (or her) and capturing a few gestures before he took off for another spot.

In this capture he looks like he’s bowing,

and I liked the contrast between him and the soft grey skies behind

and the hard, cold dark grey of the fencing.

What about you,

are you a crow or other Corvid

watcher?

  1. A wonderful shot but these and Ravens are my biggest fear as they look so menacing. I was once attacked by the ravens in the Tower of London when I was very small (holding a sandwich in my hand was not the best idea on my grandparent’s part!). Have a great week. Chel

Wonderful image! I love watching the Crows, but don’t see many. Those that come around are very wary and difficult to photograph. The Blue Jays are another story. They never fail to appear for a handout of peanuts!

  3. Oh I like this shot. Lot of great contrast with the bird and the barbed wire. We have a lot of Crows or Raven’s, I’m never sure which they are that love to snatch the peanuts I leave for the squirrels. I’ve never caught a great photo of them though as they tend to fly when I have camera in hand.

  4. ohhh i love crows and i know, they are so hard to get! i was lucky and got one out of my dining room window yesterday, i posted him on facebook and the day before i got one out while we were out driving around. maybe i’ll use that for rurality wed if you are doing it this week?

    great photo!
