A hidden gem in the high desert of Eastern Oregon, are the Painted Hills.
: : :
The Painted Hills is one of three units
making up the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument,
near the small town of Mitchell.
: : :
The coloring of the soil is due
to the differing mineral makeup of the soil layers
as they were laid down through the millenia.
: : :
Signs warn against walking off the viewing trails.
Here is a close up of some of the painted hills in the Monument
and you can clearly see that there has been walking across the face of the hills.
Whether, animal or human, the footsteps will mar the surface for a very long time.
: : :
I’ve said before and will say again,
that the high desert of eastern Oregon is some of the most rugged,
rural (even remote) country I’ve ever traveled.
My husband and I have enjoyed our trips there and plan to return for an extended stay as soon as we can.
: : :
I’ve been preparing to have family over tomorrow on Father’s Day.
You know, busy with all that one must do for company.
I was sick over Christmas and missed the family gathering then,
so I am really looking forward
to seeing everyone
tomorrow.
