Stopped for Milk Shakes - After the Ride

Nothing tastes better sometimes than a cold chocolate milkshake, with whipped cream on top.

: : :

Over Spring Break last year,

I was on my way to stay in Colfax, in the Palouse for a week of taking photos

around the premier wheat growing region of southeastern Washington and central western Idaho.

It’s about a six hour drive to Colfax from Seattle, and I needed to stop to stretch my legs.

I was alternately standing in the cold wind and pale sunshine and walking around a gravel parking lot,

when a well used pickup pulling an equally well used four horse trailer stopped across the street from me.

A family of four got out of the pickup, mom, dad and two elementary age boys.

It seemed obvious to me, they were on their way home from a Sunday afternoon ride.

My good friend Karen at ‘Rough String Ranch‘ in the beautiful high desert

of eastern Oregon said they were probably coming home from working cows, possibly branding.

Here, they stopped at the local convenience store on Main Street in Washtucna,

a small eastern Washington town with a population of 208.

Cowboy hats and especially the dad’s clothing caught my eye.

Grabbing my Pentax K7 out of the passenger seat of my Honda Element, I waited.

A couple minutes later they emerged,

the boys with milk shakes in hand, dad looking at me rather intently, mom trailing behind.

Quickly click, click, click. I got off a couple fast shots.

A minute or two later, the pickup roared to life and they pulled out onto Highway 26 heading east.

I loved the thought of their rural family outing.
