Twilight, the short span of time between the first light of dawn and the sun actually rising above the horizon.
Preparing for this post,
I learned something new this morning.
I always thought ‘dawn’ and ‘sunrise,’
‘dusk’ and ‘sunset,’ were synonyms
for the same astronomical events.
They are not.
Dawn is the first light in the morning sky.
Sunrise is when the full ‘circle’ or body of the sun rises and ‘sits’ on the horizon.
Sunset is the when the full ‘circle’ or body of the sun drops below the horizon,
and dusk is last light in the evening sky.
Twilight (Civil, Nautical and Astronomical [don’t ask me to explain all those angles of the sun below the horizon!!])
is the period between dawn and sunrise, and between sunset and dusk.
Interesting huh?

Initially, I called my post ‘Winter Sunrise,’ and that got me thinking about the terms.
Because this image was taken after dawn but before sunrise,
it technically is morning twilight.
There we go.
: : :
Filled with rich, deep colors,
the morning twilight paints a brilliant backdrop for a rural scene.
Here along Highway 11 between the small northwestern Washington town of Mt. Vernon
and and the tiny town of Bow,
a pleasant red barn sits secure in a line of fir trees,
while large round hay bales
dot the pasture
in the foreground.

Today is my 29th wedding anniversary,
we were married in 1984,
and we were both 34 at the time.
At first we chose to be married on
February 29th, Leap Day.
But it fell in the middle of the week,
so we moved the date to the 25th,
so it would fall on a weekend,
and our families could more easily attend.
: : :
Besides, I told my husband to be,
if we wed on Leap Day,
we’ll only have an anniversary every four years.
And then, you’ll have to spend four times as much,
each anniversary,
giving me a ‘really expensive’ gift!

Since I live in area with no mountains I always enjoy looking at them. Today I got a bonus with the golden sky in the background.
the soft focus on this is perfect for a sunrise …
Happy Anniversary, Madge!
Simply stunning!
Happy anniversary. I was married in 1984 too…thanks for letting me know how long I’ve been married. Looks like next year is a big one…maybe I can get a nice trip out of it. :)

I did not know that about twilight…the stuff I learn blogging! What a pretty scene!

Happy Anniversary!
Well that was quite interesting..and I sure didn’t know that. I thought like you that they were the same thing….just different terms. Thanks for educating me! Beautiful picture! Happy anniversary to you….quite an accomplishment these days!
Happy Anniversary, Madge… Hope you two had a wonderful day. When we go to Arkansas, we enjoy both sunrises and sunsets…. AND–we are up at DAWN (waiting on sunrise) —and we enjoy seeing the sky at DUSK–after watching the sunset…
Gorgeous photo…
Hugs,
Betsy
Beautiful scene! I love twilight and have always thought of it as being just in the evening. Thanks for clearing that up!
Stunning views, and Happy Anniversary Madge! xx
Gorgeous picture! This reminds me of “America the Beautiful” song – “O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, for purple mountain majesties, above the fruited plain…”. You have captured the beautiful yellows in the sky which are reflected on the mountains giving it their purple hue as well as including the barn and the fruited plain. This photo truly screams the beauty of our wonderful country. I love this!
What a beautiful image!
Happy Anniversary Madge! Lovely scene- especially in the twilight.
Happy Anniversary, Madge!
A freshly mowed pasture, a new barn, an old house peeking from behind the trees and a lovely valley setting with mountains is my idea of the ideal scene!
I wouldn’t have thought of Twilight being in the morning, for sure. I love twilight in the evening, tho, such a beautiful time of day, I love it!
Happy Happy Anniversary! =)
A gorgeous scene. I did not know the specific differences between the terms that describe the morning and evening light. Fascinating. Happy anniversary! It is good to hear nowadays of such a long marriage. <3
Happy Anniversary! This.is.gorgeous. I think this is my favorite that you have posted. The colors are breathtaking!
Happy Anniversary!!! I hope you are having as beautiful day as this photo is!
Happy anniversary – and may you enjoy many more!
Lovely red (horse?) barn. Beautiful lighting behind the mountain. Thanks for explaining the differences. :-)
Gorgeous photo! I love the Skagit Valley. So many wonderful barns. Living in Fairbanks I’m very familiar with civil twilight. We get a lot of it here and it adds a lot to our daylight hours, both summer and winter.
Lovely shot! I’m rarely outdoors that early.
