Pens, ink, paper, watercolor pencils and time.
Lately,
my days are filled with quiet.
: : :
Trying to think of quiet things I’m able to do,
besides sit in front of the tv.
I decided to spend some time reacquainting myself
with a artistic pursuit I haven’t touched in quite a few years.
: : :
when I began driving school bus my very long work days
left me so tired at the end of the day
and busy on the short weekends that I laid down my pens,
pencils and paint brushes (watercolor).
: : :
Today I took out a pristine white sheet of Bristol paper,
cut a sheet into smaller pieces
and put a B-3 Osmiroid nib on one of my vintage Esterbrook fountain pens
and did a little bit of calligraphy.
I’m surprised that my skills were still quite viable.
This was the result,
it didn’t turn out too bad,
and did occupy half hour or so
of my time.

Very pretty- you’ve still got the touch! Sorry to hear about upcoming back surgery but will send up some prayers for everything to go smoothly and for a quick recovery so you can get back outdoors to take more photos.
Thanks… I hope for a good outcome too!
This post touched a chord with me in several ways. As I read this post I am lying in bed due to a severe back issue. I’m sorry to hear that you are waiting for surgery and hope that it goes well for you. Secondly, I too am pursuing some artistic endeavors. I’m trying my hand at mixed media and just recently posted about my first attempt. Your work is beautiful and it inspires me to keep working on my own art.
Oh Tracey, SO sorry to hear that you’re suffering too with back troubles… do take it easy and I hope you’re feeling better soon!
This is beautiful. I recently began to practice my lettering and I find it very addictive and I love to sit on the couch and practice while watching tv.
Impressive. I used to play with calligraphy but haven’t bothered with it for so so long.
Not only are you a great photographer, but very artistic in other areas as well. This looks amazing.
Good Luck with your back surgery, Madge!
I learned calligraphy in middle school, but haven’t picked up a pen for years. Looks like you had not trouble remembering.
What a wonderful talent.
You have many talents…..I hope your back surgery goes well and you recover fast. I sometimes think that when I can’t do anything else ….I can blog and looks like you are an artist as well as a photographer.
Very nice … especially after such a long time. Hope things go well with your back and you’re able to have your surgery soon.

I took calligraphy classes many, many years ago, and like you, I have not practiced nor written in a very long time, but your calligraphy is just perfect and so elegant looking! Good luck on your upcoming surgery! :)
Beautiful Calligraphy, Madge. You’ve still got the touch. I’m so sorry to hear about you having back surgery. I’ve known several people who have had it with excellent results. Sending positive thoughts and prayers your way. xx
Thanks Karen…
NIce touch and amazing calligraphy!
So sorry to hear about your back issues. Hoping for a speedy recovery and relief from your pain.
It looks wonderful, Madge! I tried several times, many years ago to do this, but without much success. :-(
You have inspired me to give it another try.
Have a wonderful weekend.
you have the Gift… it takes a gift to write like this. i have tried it and mine is like chicken scratch which is what my printing and writing looks like.
I think you are very good! Even though I have very good handwriting I cannot do calligraphy! I have some kind of mental block, I fear (probably rooted in wanting perfection) so I am very impressed with your work.
I’m so sorry you have to have back surgery. All the best, Madge!
Very impressive. It’s good to see that things we learn, are still there when we get back to them.
Good luck with your surgery. Have a speedy recovery.
What is that old saying ‘you never forget how to ride a bicycle…’ Well, I don’t know about that, but I was pleasantly surprised to do that well after not having touched a pen in years…
I’ve always admired this art — you’ve been holding out on us Madge.
Hope you feel better soon — bad backs are no fun.
It’s beautiful Madge! :)
Sending good thoughts your way regarding the surgery. {{HUGS}}
Beautiful Madge… I hope your surgery is successful and your pain is relieved soon.
This is gorgeous! I used to do calligraphy and sometimes still do when someone needs a dedication or certificate done but mine is no way as intricate as this. Very beautiful! All the best with the surgery. With the wonders of technology, you will do just fine!
Well done, Madge. I did calligraphy as a teenager, but have not tried since then. I regret that it is no longer a skill.
Ooooh, bad back and back operation. Not good. You have my very best wishes that the operation goes well and addresses the problem successfully.
Love this, it looks amazing! Calligraphy is sooo cool. I think it looks like this is going to be a pen and paper renaissance for you! :)
Thinking of you and your upcoming back surgery. And this is beautiful.
I love calligraphy! I haven’t sat down and practiced for a number of years but I would hope it’s like ‘riding a bike’! LOL! Yours looks beautiful!
I hope your surgery goes well and that you are up and at it again soon. Back problems – not fun!
Hugs!
xo Catherine
That is so awesome, Madge. I really love it!
Beautiful art, beautiful scripture, and keeping you in prayer for your upcoming surgery.
