Genesis 31:49 - Calligraphy

Pens, ink, paper, watercolor pencils and time.

Lately,

my days are filled with quiet.

:    :    :

Trying to think of quiet things I’m able to do,

besides sit in front of the tv.

I decided to spend some time reacquainting myself

with a artistic pursuit I haven’t touched in quite a few years.

:    :    :

when I began driving school bus my very long work days

left me so tired at the end of the day

and busy on the short weekends that I laid down my pens,

pencils and paint brushes (watercolor).

:    :    :

Today I took out a pristine white sheet of Bristol paper,

cut a sheet into smaller pieces

and put a B-3 Osmiroid nib on one of my vintage Esterbrook fountain pens

and did a little bit of calligraphy.

I’m surprised that my skills were still quite viable.

This was the result,

it didn’t turn out too bad,

and did occupy half hour or so

of my time.

  1. This post touched a chord with me in several ways. As I read this post I am lying in bed due to a severe back issue. I’m sorry to hear that you are waiting for surgery and hope that it goes well for you. Secondly, I too am pursuing some artistic endeavors. I’m trying my hand at mixed media and just recently posted about my first attempt. Your work is beautiful and it inspires me to keep working on my own art.

I took calligraphy classes many, many years ago, and like you, I have not practiced nor written in a very long time, but your calligraphy is just perfect and so elegant looking! Good luck on your upcoming surgery! :)

  3. Beautiful Calligraphy, Madge. You’ve still got the touch. I’m so sorry to hear about you having back surgery. I’ve known several people who have had it with excellent results. Sending positive thoughts and prayers your way. xx

  4. I think you are very good! Even though I have very good handwriting I cannot do calligraphy! I have some kind of mental block, I fear (probably rooted in wanting perfection) so I am very impressed with your work.

I’m so sorry you have to have back surgery. All the best, Madge!

  5. This is gorgeous! I used to do calligraphy and sometimes still do when someone needs a dedication or certificate done but mine is no way as intricate as this. Very beautiful! All the best with the surgery. With the wonders of technology, you will do just fine!

  6. Well done, Madge. I did calligraphy as a teenager, but have not tried since then. I regret that it is no longer a skill.

Ooooh, bad back and back operation. Not good. You have my very best wishes that the operation goes well and addresses the problem successfully.

  7. I love calligraphy! I haven’t sat down and practiced for a number of years but I would hope it’s like ‘riding a bike’! LOL! Yours looks beautiful!
I hope your surgery goes well and that you are up and at it again soon. Back problems – not fun!
    Hugs!
