Birds on the Wire

Birds on a Wire - Fisher Flour Mills - Seattle WA

‘Like a bird on the wire, like a drunk in a midnight choir, I have tried in my way to be free.’

The lines opening my post are lyrics from the popular song written by Leonard Cohen in 1968,

it is one of his signature songs.

:    :    :

Here in the light of a very early,

chilly,

damp Seattle morning,

pigeons perch.

They are like hundreds of winged observers

above the Fisher Flour Mills dock

on the west waterway of Harbor Island.

They are free.

:    :    :

Isn’t that what we all want?

In some measure?

I do.

Sometimes,

I long to be set free from the things that bind me,

from bad health,

from changing finances,

from obligations.

Free,

to come and go.

Free,

to do as I please.

Free.

  1. Whenever I’ve seen something like this, I think there must be a storm coming. And I agree…it would be wonderful to be free of all this stuff that surrounds us. I’ve often wondered what it would take to get to that place and it always comes down to one thing…money, cold hard cash. And then there would be the burden of taxes and financial advisors and bank accounts…OK, show me the money! I’m game! LOL Cool photo!

I used to love Judy Collins’ version of that song.

Sounds to me like someone may be feeling a little sunk into winter. I know I am! I’m dreaming of a good dose of sunshine, walking with less than two or three layers of clothes, and flowers. . .lots of flowers.

  3. You have a fine eye, Madge, to capture this sight — both common and unusual at the same time. AND, combining it with a Leonard Cohen verse . . . my alltime favorite songwriter . . . Hallelujah, Suzanne, Closing Time, I’m Your Man, . . .

Plus, a sensitive reflection. You nailed it today.

  4. The liberating ability to remove yourself from burdens as we know them (health, wealth, details) would be wonderful; I fret, however, that they would only be replaced by “do not let that hawk see me”, or “whew, that was a close call with the mack-truck”. But just for a day I could be satisfied with hanging high in a tree, hopefully out of sight of both the hawk and on-coming traffic.

    Great shot!

  5. Hi Madge, How could I have missed your gorgeous blog??? I have enjoyed looking through some of your recent photos… Excellent… Like you said, to a photographer, it’s all about the LIGHT.

Love the picture of all of these birds… Wow… That’s a bunch.. I had a big group off and on to my feeders this past weekend during our snowy days… I’ll post that blog on Friday.

Please come back anytime and I will return to yours.

    Hugs,
    Betsy
