One penny, one-hundredth of a dollar, a cent.
Who among us has mourned recently over a lost penny?
I can probably say that most,
if not all of us have not.
I haven’t.
But I do stop and pick them up when I see them on the ground,
do you?

This afternoon,
while picking up a load of elementary students.
One of my little kindergarten girls came aboard crying.
I stopped her and asked,
‘What’s wrong Elysa?’(not her real name)
She said, ‘I lost my money!’ with quivering lips.
Tears still streaming down her face,
she sat down with her older brother in the first seat.

A moment or two later,
a teacher came to my bus door with two brothers.
She asks that they not sit together and in the front of the bus,
because of some incident that happened a few minutes prior to my arrival.
I said, ‘of course.’

‘It was all over this,’
she said, as she opens her hand,
there in her palm lay one shiny,
copper penny.
‘Oh, I think I know who that belongs to,’ I said,
as I turned to Elysa,
‘How much money did you lose?’ I asked.
My question brought fresh tears,
‘a penny,’ she said.
‘Is this it?’ I asked.
Her face lit up,
she grinned widely,
as she took the penny from my hand,
happy once more.

It made me think.
Pennies,
are such insignificant lone pieces of money.
Yet, they can be powerful.
I’ve heard it said that if you,
‘Take care of your pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves.’
One penny, one-hundredth of a dollar, a cent.
There are those to whom even one is precious.

See a penny, pick it up. All day long you’ll have good luck! Yes, I do pick them up. I’ve gotten in the habit of saving all my change. It doesn’t always happen but it sure can amount to a significant sum over time. And when I collect a decent amount, it goes to my 3 grandsons. And this post brought a tear…I can just imagine how upset she was. Glad she got that penny back and it was luck that she did!

Oh I do pick them up – good luck and all that – and it is fun to watch others smile in acknowledgement when I do pick one up. I’m so glad the little girl got her money back – nothing so sad as losing your money.

Hi Madge, What a precious post and such a lesson from a child to appreciate every single penny. I too will pick them up, just because they are there. Seems right not to leave them on the ground. So glad this story ended with a smiling and happy child. It was so special for you to be apart of it too.

What a cute story, and I do still pick up pennies
very much enjoy the story and I do pick them up when i see them. once i saw my oldest son throw two pennies on the ground, he was a grown man at the time, i said David, why are you throwing them down, he said it’s only pennies they are worth anything. i said do you know i bought that bed in the spare room with pennies i collected in a jar….
Oh, I’m so glad the little girl got her penny back! It meant so much to her. I always pick up pennies when I see them.
They are supposed to bring good luck and they do add up.

Sweet story, Madge! My husband is always finding old coins. Once he found a 1910 dime behind the Black Diamond Bakery (he was making a delivery). He looks at all the coins he has to check the dates and loves to find the ‘wheat pennies’. Have a nice weekend! xx

I do pick up pennies. I get teased, too. But, sooner or later those pennies add up.
Maybe if more people cared about the pennies, this world would be in better shape.

Great story! My mother-in-law used to pick up pennies and say, “If you ignore the pennies the universe will get the message you’re not interested and won’t offer the bigger stuff, either.”
In Canada the penny is going the way of the dodo bird. The last one was minted in 2012. They are gradually taking them out of circulation.

My husband always picks up a penny when he see one laying on the ground and always says that it’s a reminder…In God We Trust. Grateful for that truth emblazoned on a penny.

This year the penny will slowly go out of circulation in Canada. It is already extinct in Australia.
