Jules Maes Saloon - Georgetown WA

Established in 1888, the Jules Maes Saloon has been opening it’s doors to hungry and thirsty customers for 125 years.

Having been remodeled a number of times,

it still has a historic look and blue-collar feel.

When it first opened all those years ago,

the Rainier Brewery was across the street,

in a beautiful complex of old red brick buildings.

The brewery employed 300,

that’s a lot of thirsty men.

Georgetown is one of the oldest neighborhoods of Seattle.

It ‘got left in the past,’

for years it was just dingy and rundown.

But a few years ago,

people began to notice the small neighborhood.

As home prices rose dramatically in Seattle,

you could still purchase a modest old home in Georgetown for a proverbial song.

And you were only about three miles from downtown.

Homes and businesses alike have seen renovation and revitalization,

but regardless of a new coat of paint,

the neighborhood still retains its blue-collar down-to-earthiness.

My husband and and I enjoy eating out during happy hour several times a month.

Prices are more reasonable then.

We always go late on Friday afternoons before the after work crowd gets out.

Yesterday,

we decided to try Jules Maes Saloon.

It was already quite busy when we arrived,

but we scored a table for two tucked into a corner next to a large front window.

We each ordered a beer,

my husband had a PBR and I had a Manny’s Pale Ale from the Georgetown Brewery.

We also ordered an appetizer plate called ‘Flatliners.’

I have no idea what the name represents.

It was tatertots topped with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese,

diced onion, green pepper, fresh tomato,

and crumbled bacon with a dollop of sour cream.

It was really tasty,

I plan on making some here at home,

it was that good!

  2. I love hearing about once abandoned areas coming alive again. I think I know why that dish was called ‘flatliners’! Hee. My husband’s cardiologist would not approve. :) But it certainly sounds wickedly delicious!

  3. I wish there was a neat little bar like that around here! I have never lived “in” a city—actually, I’ve never lived NEAR a city—and I know why urban dwellers like what a city offers. You’ve certainly captured this beautifully, Madge! (I assume you are finally feeling better—I hope???)
