Barn Parts

Red Barn on Frager Road - Kent WA

Part: /pärt/, (noun) A piece or segment of something. Here on Frager Road along the Green River in the Kent valley,

is this red barn.

When I was a kid it was a dairy,

one of quite a few around the valley,

I can’t for the life of me remember the name though.

These days,

it is a boarding facility for horses,

out back there is a quarter mile track for exercising them.

I would have shot a bit differently,

but there were vehicles in the way and I didn’t like the distraction from the subject at hand.

:     :     :

What about you,

do you crop out unwanted elements while shooting?

  1. I love the angle of this shot. I always manipulate my ‘stance’ in accordance with what I want in the frame…sometimes that means some very odd angles and shots I was not anticipating…but that is photography and art at it’s finest.

  2. I’m getting better but I once was notorious for forgetting to look at the edges of the viewfinder for distracting ‘stuff.’ I’d crop or clone away the garbage but, sometimes, the cloning would get way to obvious. Love this shot!

  3. Yep – I definitely crop – either I’m trying to get rid of something I don’t like, or I didn’t compose the shot as well as I would like to have. This is a great shot of the barn part – it fills the frame nicely!

  4. I believe my barn this week is the first one I’ve ever photographed, though I grew up in rural Quebec. All to say I can offer you no barn photography experience but I do think you have made a very fine capture. Now, we are fellow Pacific North Westerners though from different countries. :)

  5. Yes ma’am, I crop out or try to shoot to avoid those pesky distractions all the time, just makes the pics more interesting & focused on the subject at hand… This pic, case in point! =)

    Thank you for joining =)

  6. I try my best to do it before I shoot, but sometimes they just cannot be avoided. Luckily I am one of those crazy people who love all thing linear, so telephone poles and lines do not bother me in the least. Now, cars are another thing…and the yuck along the road and in the yards. I do not like those.Glad this barn complex is still being used. Horse boarding must be quite the business…a lot of hard work. genie

I try to frame as I shoot but sometimes it’s so impossible to move into the right spot. And if I’m not paying attention I tend at times to get things a little tilted (like my perspective on the world). Then it’s time to go into the digital darkroom.

  8. I like the perspective from which you chose to shoot here. Sometimes a zoom in is more interesting that a broad view. I don’t know a lot about photoshop editing–mostly just try to shoot things straight so won’t have to mess with straightening tool. BTW, what was under that unusually tall roof?
