Simple Elegance, the Daisy – ‘Eye of the Day’

Simple Elegance - Lone Daisy

This lone and autumn blooming daisy caught against the deep shadows of the forest edge, gives a wonderful and simply beautiful presentation by using a shallow depth of field to give the background a pleasing bokeh. Daisies belong to the ‘Asteraceae’ family, there are more than 20,000 species in this family, the largest family of flowering plants. The name daisy, comes from the Welsh ‘Llygad y Dydd,’ meaning ‘Eye of the Day, because they open at dawn and close at dusk. In Scotland, they are commonly known as ‘bruisewort,’ because the leaves, when crushed and applied are thought to heal bruises. Chamomile is used as an herbal tea. Common and commercially grown foods that are part of the family that includes daisies are artichoke, safflower, sunflower and lettuce. As a child I can remember making ‘Daisy Chains,’ garlands of daisies worn like a Hawaiian lei around my neck or a crown on my head.
