Ready or not, here I come!
Remember shouting that out as kid to warn your friends that you were finished counting and coming to look for them while playing the outdoor hiding game ‘Hide n’ Seek.’ Well, that’s how I feel about Christmas. Ready or not, here it comes!
When my kids were little it was exciting and fun, all their anticipation and wide eyed wonder made all the hoopla worth while. These days not so much. My spirit has waned over the last few years. My mind and heart are split into two. Let me describe it using a couple of my favorite Christmas movies. On one hand we have ‘Christmas Story,’ and ‘Prancer,’ which aptly describe the anticipation of Christmas through a child’s eyes. On the other there’s ‘Christmas with the Kranks,’ who were going to skip Christmas and take a trip instead. I waffle between these two extremes in enthusiasm. Oh let’s not forget another of my favorite Christmas movies ‘Christmas Vacation.’ Whose family gathering hasn’t had a few of their laughable characters and funny mishaps.
There it is, I love to still have the wonder and anticipation of Christmas but would also like to just get the heck out of Dodge. What about you?
Here in the tiny western Washington town of Roy, a Christmas tree gleams and shines out of the darkened sanctuary at the century old Roy Community Church, through a Gothic window into a grey winter day.

I am in that same place and have been struggling this year about even putting up decorations. I decided this morning to just set out the Poinsetta and that’s it. I’m now on semester break from teaching and I want to spend that time doing other things like ‘photo field trips’ as opposed to putting up and taking down Christmas stuff…which is so totally opposite as to how I have been at Christmas over the years. Ah well, change is good.
Well, you know how I feel. :) Lovely image for those that still believe. Lol.
P.S. Would love to have you join me over at ‘Cool Clicks Thursday’ ;)
i love christmas vacation. :)
I am definately hanging on to the traditional celebration this year. But next year would like to get the rest of my gang on board with trying something different…
That is a fabulous picture, love the lights and love that window! :)
I am so NOT ready for Christmas this year. I like Danielle’s idea of skipping the decorations altogether.
Cute post Madge. I’m sure you are not alone with your mixed feelings, LOL!
lovely reflection of the Christmas tree in the window. Gothic is my favorite archicetectural building style:)
I’m right there with you, Madge. Your photo intrigues me–is it an old building? I’m wondering if the glass is old. Thanks for stopping by Portland Oregon Daily Photo. I do love taking photos in the evening with all of the lights everywhere. I guess about decorations, I love it when they are the responsibility of someone else who is willing to share with the rest of us.
A beautiful scene of the tree in the window, Madge. All I can say is – some years are better than others! I’ve lost a little spirit this year, too. We always say we are going to Hawaii, but we never do! Maybe next year……
Oh it is nice to know I am not the only one. Maybe if the snow came I would find my Christmas spirit but as of yet I am totally missing it and trying to find it.
Love the photo it is beautiful. B
Fortunately for me, in Sweden when I grew up there, Christmas didn’t begin until a few days before Christmas Eve. None of that early shopping, early baking, early Christmas tree. The tree went up the night before Christmas Eve and then stayed up for the 12 days of Christmas. After that us kids would have tree plundering parties, strip the tree, get a lot of goodies, and that was it. So I am not at all stressed about Christmas.
I’ll go with Capote’s A Christmas Memory”.
Great photo! But I am so there with you. As the years have gone by I find I am doing as little as possible to celebrate this holiday. Case in point…my pull-up Christmas tree. I want this holiday to be quiet…I’m avoiding stations that play Christmas music, I’m avoiding the mall, I’m trying to avoid anything stressful. I have enough in my normal day-to-day life. In fact, if I slept through much of it, it would probably be just fine. And I will definitely sleep through New Year’s…either that or get on line and catch up on blogs! LOL
Beautiful shot Madge!
I’m glad I found your site..very nice! Beautiful photos throughout! I’ll visit often!
So pretty!
