Twinkies

Twinkies, in all their cakey, creamy, golden goodness are no more. It’s hard to say exactly what caused the demise of Hostess Cakes, but this past week they closed the doors on November 12th in Seattle due to the strike by union employees who are members of Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union. One employee was a lady who had worked there for 41 years, and across the country about 18-20,000 people will lose their jobs. The strike certainly was the last nail in the coffin for a business that has been making sweet bakery treats like Twinkies, Ho Ho’s, SnoBalls, Wonder Bread and Ding Dongs since the 1930s.

Personally, I hadn’t bought nor eaten a Twinkie in years, but Friday on the way home from work I stopped by a 7-11 and bought six packs. My husband, son and I each ate a pack and some posed for photos. The Hostess Outlet store in Everett had a run on products, people buying up boxes by the cart full to sell on the internet. I just made a dash through eBay and noticed boxes of 10 packs going for about twenty bucks, but one seller is selling a box of 10 for $250 (Buy It Now), no worries though, shipping is free!

  1. From the reports I’ve read, management and the union couldn’t come to an agreement. Management asked employees to take a pay cut; union said NO so the company went out of business.
I bet the union bosses got their pound of flesh though; they should be ashamed! The only people they’ve “represented” is themselves.
So, employees not only lost their jobs but their retirements, pensions, benefits…Everything! All because management wouldn’t compromise…idiots.

  2. I see the good old entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well. Still, these products are a part of America, I mean, Wonderbread, what’s more American than that? I don’t eat any of this stuff, so I won’t miss it, but I do feel bad for the employees who will lose so much.

  3. I favored Hostess Cupcakes over Twinkies, always. Sad for folks to lose their jobs. Madge, I’m glad that the VW van turned out to be like yours! My husband and I had a second-hand VW bug for a couple of years before he died in April, 1983. He loved those cars, and I love him so I loved them!

  4. I’m always watching what I eat and a few weeks ago I looked at a pack of Snoballs and said one day when I feel like being a kid again I will buy a pack and eat them as I did when I was a kid. The first one was savored in two pieces, outer chewy marshmallow top first and then the yummy cake last. The second would be eaten normally. Goes to prove you should never wait until tomorrow, it may never come.

  5. Holy Toledo. Those people selling the twinkies know how to make a buck. I had read that the business would be no more. Very bad all of those people will be out of work. Did the strike actually cause the company to shutter its doors? I have not eaten any junk food for 35 years+.

  6. sad news about all those out of work now…kind of ironic to be on strike over wages and now they have NONE…it’s disgusting to me those people selling them on ebay….i don’t know why, it just bugs me.

  7. I don’t care for the twinkies – but I felt sorry for the workers. The CEO kept raising his salary and making the workers take pay cuts – in some places as many as 8 pay cuts – and they said NO MORE – when he raised his salary to over 2.5 million and expected them to take another pay cut. No wonder they didn’t agree to it. It is a no win situation – well except for that stingy, miserly cowardly thieving CEO.

  8. I’ve never eaten a Twinkie…yeah, I know, I’ve been sheltered…LOL However, even though I haven’t had them in many year, I’m a sucker for those wonderful powdered little cute donettes. For a few minutes we thought there was some hope today…CNBC was reporting that the strikers wanted to negotiate. Too little, too late…the judge has already made the decision. So many jobs lost…it is done! Hope someone gets moving and buys the company…my mom needs a loaf of white breat! :)
