Two young girls filled with excited anticipation are heading into Craven Farm with dad and grandpa to pick out Halloween pumpkins.
Craven Farm is located south of the town of Snohomish near Lord’s Hill on Treosti Road. Offering their barn from Spring to Fall for country weddings and other events, they also have a ‘Tailgate’ Antique sale in late June, where pickups filled with antiques and country collectibles gather at the farm for visitors to peruse the vintage offerings. But their Pièce de résistance is the fall pumpkin patch and corn maze. When I was at the farm a couple weeks ago on a weekday, the parking lot was almost full of families taking their kids in to enjoy the activities.
When my kids were little, I usually took them out into the Green River Valley between Kent and Auburn (where I grew up) to pick pumpkins. My son always wanted the one that was too big to carry, it was usually raining and one of them would always slip and fall in the mud, one year a Japanese truck farmer told my kids to pick out their pumpkins for free, they couldn’t believe their good fortune… fun memories!
An aside ~ I am so saddened by the loss of life, property and livelihood by our fellow Americans on the east coast due to this ‘one-hundred year’ storm, Hurricane Sandy. I guess simply growing food, without all the events etc, doesn’t provide enough farm income, a sad comment on the times.

amazing entrance way, i wonder if they are glued down, being the person i am the first thing i thought was pushing one off the ledge. daddy was a farmer and grew everything we ate, and now i wonder why he never grew pumpkins…
