Amber Waves of Grain

Wheat at Sunset - Palouse - Washington

A gentle breeze at sunset causes the wheat to sway and softly rustle.
Harvest ready wheat awaits the combine to whisk it away to destiny, as the sun drenches it in the long, warm amber rays of day’s end.

Have you ever sat beside fields of wheat to watch them sway in the breeze? ‘America the Beautiful,’ a classic American anthem describes it as ‘amber waves of grain.’ It is true, as the wind moves across the vast fields of wheat, they do move like waves on the ocean. The sound is unlike any other I’ve ever heard, it is a soft rustling, almost a whispering sound that ebbs and flows. The only sound that breaks either the silence or the whispering is the occasional cry of a hawk, ‘sqreeee.’ For me, the sight and sound of the wheat swaying and rustling washes over me causing a peacefulness that I do not experience any place else and I long for when I’m gone.

  1. Beautiful capture of the sun through the field. I can imagine myself lying there in the field looking up. I have heard that sound before when I lived near wheat fields in Oregon. You have described it perfectly. xx
