Come On, Let's Walk - Dog Owner Texting Instead of Walking

Walking means putting one foot in front of the other to get from one place to another. Here in the downtown Seattle neighborhood of Belltown, a man stood riveted to his cell phone while his golden lab waits, and waits and yes, waits to continue on their early morning walk.

Doesn’t it amaze you just a bit, that a good percentage of the time when you see people in public places their faces are focused or buried in a cell phone. Cell phones are supposed to help keep people connected. But often it seems to me that these amazing pieces of technology are causing people to disengage from people, traffic and the immediate scene around them.

I have a smart phone, a Droid X, I love it, but I never call/text and drive, nor do I bury my face in it while out in public. What about you?

  1. Yes! Amazing that there aren’t more PEDESTRIAN accidents because of cell phones. I can’t tell you how many times I (as a driver) have to stop in the middle of a parking lot or street to let someone cross in front of me –and they don’t even have a clue that a car sits a couple feet from them waiting because they are talking (or more likely texting) their cell phone.

It is disturbing. I think in the future, we won’t be talking in person at all. It will be all electronic. Then, one day, the whole wireless structure will crash and we won’t have the skills to communicate.

  3. Don’t have a smart phone, just a plain old dumb phone. My boss was away on vacation this week and did not have his computer but he certainly did have his IPad. Ugh! Thank you Mr. Jobs! And how I wish people would get it through their thick heads that you can’t talk on your cell and drive AND many, if not most, can’t walk and talk/text! Oh boy, now I’m venting. Sorry! Hv a 1derful wkend!

  4. I have an iPhone and I don’t use it like other folks do. Most of my texting is during business hours and I do not answer the phone or text while driving like some people. It’s scary when you see someone driving, on the phone and applying makeup at the same time. Cute dog btw.

  5. Poor pup! I hope he FINALLY got to finish his walk! I sometimes wonder what we did before cell phones. I wouldn’t want to be without mine, living rural and all, but I don’t text and I certainly don’t talk on the phone while dining out or checking out in the grocery store!

  6. I agree, Madge! In fact, there was just a news story last week about a guy who fell off the subway platform in New York while talking on his cell phone, another fellow who practically ran into a bear while talking on his phone. Last time I visited my daughter in Phoenix we went to a pizza place and sat outside at a table on the sidewalk. Four lovely young ladies came and sat down at an adjoining table. They didn’t talk to each other. They were all texting on their phones! Being a lover of words and a proofreader, I often wonder what will happen to our written language due to the advent of texting!

  7. My husband and I each carry a cel phone but we are seldom apart. One is for our convenience only. We rarely give the number to anyone. The other acts as our landline and when it is not convenient it goes to voice mail. We are retired and are not slaves to the conveniences of others. We do however try to check our voice mail often and return important calls as promptly as we can.
